Same here. Library in Calibre; a few hundreds books that I'm likely to want to read in the near future on my Kindle.

I do understand. I managed my books in folders by author for many years, and didn't start using calibre for some time after it became available, even though I had been moaning about the lack of 'an iTunes for eBooks' for ages.

I was wrong. They are wrong. But I accept that there's no way to persuade them of that.

I know all about calibre. I use it. But only as a form of back up and cataloging my reads. Kind of like goodreads, just with the actual files. Unless of course they are library loans or KU, then its just a empty book.
I mark stuff as read, I have the genre tags and such, star ratings. But I do not use calibre to decide what to read next or to load my books as I only read the books that come straight from Amazon. The ones in calibre are just backup.

I use collections on my kindles for sorting what to read, when to read and when I am done.

If I had known about Calibre several thousand books ago, I might have tried it.
On cookbooks, they are generally kept on Kindle for PC or just deleted after looked at.
Most I picked up were on free day.
I did learn cross stitch books and devices do not play well together. Highlights don't work on pictures.
Novels and shorts I just keep on a device until read or tried to read.
Though since I implemented my what I won't even look at, I have fewer bad books.

I have all of my books in Calibre and Calibre backed up in multiple locations. Yet I still like to have all of my books at my fingertips, so I have them all on my HD+. I never know where I will be when I finish a book and rarely have made a decision on what to read next.

I read a lot of library books so those get returned when finished. The books I have bought I keep on the reader in case I want to reread. There have been only a couple that I disliked enough to delete.

I usually delete them once read, but if I bought the book elsewhere I have to double-check to make sure I have a copy on my machine. I usually do since I typically download to my laptop, put it in calibre and then port to my kindle. The lack of ability to sort on kindle is a huge detriment for me. I lose track of books I haven't read--I forget I buy them and they get pushed so far back, they may never be seen again. I wish I could see covers too--that reminds me of why I bought the book and generally tells me instantly if it's a cozy, a thriller, UF or sci/fi. I do a lot of browsing of my library on Amazon and I hate that because I still can sort.

I have and will delete unreadable books completely off the kindle AND off the Amazon list. Yeah, it means I might accidentally buy it again, but since almost all of the unreadable ones were free, it's not likely that I'll accidentally spend money on one (I usually sample actual purchases). If there were a nice container I could EASILY stick them in, I'd probably do that, but all the methods I've tried just end up too hard to maintain.

I honestly think one of the reasons Amazon makes it so hard to sort and categorize is to have people just shop for something new.

I generally keep whatever I am currently reading on
my ereader; I tend to read series of ten or more books
at a time so it makes sense.Once read, I remove them
and add my 'next batch' of books. When I first had my
reader I tended to fill it with a couple of thousand books;
this,I found tended to slow down the page turns and the
reader in general. So I began to trim the number of ebooks
down.
All the ebooks I have,I keep backed up on my PC and
on either a usb stick or burned to a disc. That way,I can
have the option of re-reading them anytime in the future.
Once in a blue moon, I find a book that is so bad or so
uninteresting (to me) that I will permanently delete it.
Given the cost of the books in relation to the pleasure I
get from the reading of them, it makes sense to save them,
as I would with a real paper book!

I remove books from my reader after I am finished. I keep "currently reading" and a small "TBR" list on my reader only. I can always redownload them from the cloud later if I want to read them again. I just don't reread that many books. I mark them as read in calibre including the date finished. Then I update my Goodreads account.

I'm another who only keeps a relatively small number of books on my ereader. So I delete them as soon as I've read them, mark them read in Calibre (I've got to keep them as otherwise I'd start re-reading tons of books I'd forgotten I'd read previously) and just every now and then load up another dozen or so books from Calibre onto my ereader.

You have not answered the question that was asked. The OP did not ask "what do you do when you've finished a book", but "what do you do with the book that you've finished".

After reading I tend to just leave them on the device. Storage is cheap. If it is a book that I can't read due to being in my view, just a bad read I delete it - if I can't read it no use in keeping it (not like I'll get around to trying it again later).
