Just an update. I finished downloading all the books that fictionwise said were expiring. It said that 106 titles were affected. When I got done downloading all the books, I only had 84 titles in my folder. Don't know know what happened to the other 22.// Scratch that. I missed an entire page for downloading purposes. am dumb. Last edited by da_jane; 01-08-2009 at 11:46 PM. |

7 of 133 with 3 replacements so far. The OverDrive books were all MS Lit format.

83 of 403, with 47 replacements, but e-reader is not much use to me.

Well, for now my BoB books are safe. I'm still happy that Mobidedrm exists for the 5/23 Overdrive eBooks without replacement files over at Fictionwise. Makes my work to backup all my eBooks into liberated format worth it.

Thanks for the heads-up - only one title out of 40-odd for me - but out of interest, did anyone get an email from Fictionwise about this? None of the regular emails I get from Fictionwise have mentioned this problem, and aside from the faq links provided in this thread, there's no mention of it on Fictionwise' website. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that Fictionwise are taking positive steps for those people affected, but if it hadn't been for Mobileread I'd never have known the problem existed - so thanks again! |

I suspect that an email from Fictionwise to their usual mailing list will be going out in the next few days. |

I'm glad I'vev only bought an ebook there. But it would be catastrophic if the same happens to BoB |

The scary thing is that since no one outside of Overdrive appears to know why they stopped serving FW we have no way to tell whether BoB might suffer the same problems at a future date. This concerns me because while I don't have much OD from FW, OD mobi has been my most common purchase format from BoB because of their reduced selection and higher prices in eReader in comparison to FW. (Many of BoB's really good deals/freebies exclude eReader for some reason). I don't know which bothers me more - Overdrive pulling out of FW, or the lack of transparency regarding the whole situation. I trust FW enough that I think if they knew but could not reveal it publicly they would say that rather than say they don't know. |

I did a little research into my list of ebooks that are not yet available for replacement and found that they are all books published by Kensington. I went further and found that Kensington offers ebooks for sale on their website and the lit format is still available there. Of course, I have no intention of buying them again, but the fact that Kensington has their own ebook store and that the replacements are not yet available at Fictionwise is interesting. The question begs to be asked: In this economy, why would a server who is being paid on time and per contract cut off a revenue source? Even if the contract is with a competitor of sorts, why shoot yourself in the foot? So many questions, so few answers. . . Kaz |
