Documenting Jazz history

At the moment, working my way through https://www.flickr.com/photos/librar...th/5475994809/

William P. Gottlieb was a New York City photographer and film maker, and a noted jazz fan. In the 40's and 50's, he did a lot of portrait photography of jazz musicians and bands, starting with the swing bands of the 40's like Glen Miller and progressing to things like bebop in the 50's.

52nd Street in NYC was jazz heaven back then. You could walk down the street to places like Eddie Condon's and the Double Deuces, and hear Charlie "Bird" Parker, Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and others. They recorded, but records weren't the point of the exercise. You got up in front of an audience and played. If I had access to a time machine, I know one place I might go and spend time.

Gottleib donated his archive to the Library of Congress, who put it up on Flicker. Just wonderful.

Today's Boxing Day (or, as we call it in Dutch, Second Christmas Day) and I'm a bit bored. I've done the things I planned to do today and now nothing seems to be able to hold my attention for long.

Sitting here, up too early, regretting the dietary choices I made yesterday and the indigestion I've had since last night.

I am sitting in my sparkly living room cursing the person who decided that adding sparkles to tissue paper was a good idea.

Swiffer is your friend when it comes to things sparkly and glittery.

I don't like glitter 99.9% of the time and will only add it to my projects if it can be contained (e.g. in a shaker card, behind plastic). This year Christmas cards with glitter were all the rage. Every time I opened a new batch I had to go wipe my hands.

Shopping around for a new plaid/blanket. Yesterday I noticed that my favourite fleece blanket has lost most of its softness and is starting to wear at the edges. I'll give it to Lexie, since she seems to still love it (although that probably because it's mine now, as soon as it's her blanket it won't be her favourite anymore).

This time I want a knitted plaid/blanket. Ikea has some nice ones, but they are the smaller size and not long enough for me snuggle up under.

Reading up on my future mobile phone. My Samsung Galaxy S3 is really on its last legs; even with minimal apps it's very, very slow and the battery doesn't hold it's charge very well.

I've decided to go for the Honor (Huawei) 7. A decent phone, with a good camera for a good price. I'm planning to order it next week, so I can get to know it when I'm on vacation the week after. That also gives me time to back up my current phone and arrange for a replacement sim card (nano sized). I'm hoping to do that today, according to the website of my provider you can get one in their stores.

At the moment I'm recuperating from a major battle involving a needle, some thread, and a zipper. The zipper on one of my shirt pockets came open and I slid the zip thingie off and turned the pocked inside out and slid it back on one side, then fought for 15 or 20 minutes to get it going on the other side. When I finally got it to start zipping, I took a needle and thread and locked the base with approximately 20,000 stitches, all individually tied off. That was when I realized I'd sewed the zipper on backwards. So I cut out all the threads and started again. Success, finally.

This isn't in the rant thread, only because I can always use another lesson in patience.

My wife now says she has a pair of pants I can sew. She's so cute. She thinks I might actually be that nice.

Where do all these people come from?!

Yesterday we had nearly 150 paying customer and today 114! My feet hurt, I'm tired and hoping tomorrow will be a quiet day. The 31st of December usually is, but so is 24th and it was an extremely busy day last week.

I'm now trying to decide which of me two new teas I'm going to try tonight. After brewing it I'm going to curl up in bed with the first of The Lord of the Rings films (extended version, of course) and relax.

My youngest son had a homework a few months ago that involved a little bit of sewing. Myself, Mrs B and both sons tried for almost an hour to just thread a needle, with no success

We ended up sending a note to school!
