I have put this on hold to read Judas Unchained by Peter F. Hamilton. I have been waiting over 3 months for this from my library. I suspect this won't be completed until early next year though since it is over 1,200 pages long.

I saw it's often compared to Gone Girl, but in my opinion they are two very different books.
I agree with you. I thought it was pretty mediocre. No bad but certainly not prize worthy IMO. I expected to love it (or at least really like it... ) and was quite surprised I did not.

Currently, I am reading Elizabeth George's latest novel -- A Banquet of Consequences (Inspector Lynley). I am only about 100 pages into this (long) book, but enjoying it. It is the first one of her books I have tried. I would prefer to start with the first book in the series, but this one is my book club selection so I had to jump in totally in the dark about the main characters. I will probably go back and start from the beginning later.

I'm currently reading the Audible version of Sharpe's Havoc, read by Patrick Tull. And enjoying it. I'm choosing to read them in chronological order, rather than published order.

I likes the female outlaw with the male hero being a preacher. It was a unique twist to the average romance.

Since I have not posted in several days I have read so many books I am behind in posting. I read all four books in the A Myrtle Crumb Mystery series by Gayle Trent. I enjoyed the 60-something grandmother in this cozy mystery series. The books are short so I read almost all the books in one setting.

After that I moved on to Daphne Martin Mystery series by Gayle Trent. I am almost finished with this series. I admit that this was a little slow in the first book but I quickly enjoyed this series. I do not enjoy the females flashback to her abusive husband. Just me and something I have personally experienced.

Next I am moving to An Embroidery Mystery series by Amanda Lee.

After a little searching Amanda Lee and Gayle Trent are the same person. I am looking for an enjoyable thrilling mystery in this series.

Hope everyone is having an enjoyable read this Christmas.

Another excellent adventure. I do like the afterwords, explaining which bits are fictional and which are real history.

I also read a tiny short by Lawrence Watt-Evans, The Abduction of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Next up: Asimov's SF, January 2016.

I finished The Dead Girls' Dance by Rachel Caine (#2 Morganville Vampires). An okay read. I suspect I would have liked it more if I hadn't read it during the most busy and chaotic days of the year, though.

I finished reading the Familias books. Read a Charles River Editors piece about the Antikythera device... when will I learn that those books aren't worth the price? I mean, seriously, I only download the free ones, but that still seems too expensive sometimes.

At any rate, my laptop was killed the day before Christmas, so I am limited to whatever is currently loaded into my reader until that gets repaired... I am still working on the Terry Brooks book, at the moment.

Sharpe! I read one of those. No idea which, but that's what got me mildly interested in military fiction. Sneaked it out the library because I was too busy reading it to notice.

I like books

I like books
They're fun reads, and have a good deal of accurate historical information in them. I first got interested in them with the TV versions, which starred Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe. The series led me to start reading (and listening to) the original books.

I've always enjoyed historical fiction since my first teenage discovery of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower books. Later, as an adult, I discovered Patrick O'Brian's absolutely wonderful Aubrey/Maturin series, which to my mind are the best of all the British Naval historical fiction books.

Currently reading Sharpe's Havoc, and a Patricia Wentworth Miss Silver book, The Chinese Shawl. And dipping in and out of the Christmas Mysteries book that the Book Club is reading.

I'm reading The Disfavored Hero by Jessica Amanda Salmonson.

I might be able to squeeze one more book in before the year's end...

Excellent. Some nice foreshadowing from the Earth trip. I do hope the fifth volume leads to a satisfying stopping point.

Next up, for what's probably my last read of 2015, my oldest unread ebook: Lucifer's Crown by Lillian Stewart Carl.

Wow - I paid £4.53 for this, back on 29th January 2007, nearly nine years ago! But that was in the bad old days, before MobiDeDRM came to our rescue, and I restricted myself to buying drm-free titles.

Well, let's see if I picked a good one or a stinker way back then.

Sorry to hear about the laptop. Hopefully it's easily fixed.

It was a very enjoyable few nights reading everything by Gayle Trent aka Amanda Lee. I highly recommend the Daphne Martin & An Embroidery series. I am waiting on book 9 in An Embroidery Mystery to come in at my library.

I have started A Myrtle Clover Mystery by Elizabeth Spann Craig but I am having a problem because of so many spelling & grammar errors. While reading the first book in this series character names used in the middle of a sentence were not capitalized and there were several places were quotation marks were forgotten when a character was speaking. This really put a stick in my reading and I would get thrown out of my sync. I finished and had some very good laughs but after starting the second book in this series last night I have found the same errors.

Good question. I am one of those scientific-minded persons who likes to read all the nitty-gritty details (but skip the equations because I've only learned up to trig), and to me these books read like a broad overview suited more to the disinterested teenager than to someone like myself. For example, while there were a few photos and illustrations in the book about the Antikythera device, there was not anything like a detailed analysis of how the machine operated. There were no closeups of the replicas built or really even an adequate explanation why someone would go to the trouble of building one of these machines back in the second century BCE.

In fact, I am finding the Wikipedia entry on the device more satisfying to read.

I guess I am just a little beyond the intended audience for Charles River... I'm more interested in white papers and college-level theses.

As for the laptop, I have managed to dry it out enough to use, though my touchpad is crapped out. I am using a wireless mouse in lieu of, and debating with myself whether I want to send it in for repair, or open it up again myself and see if I can get the last bits of moisture out of the touchpad assembly. It's still under warranty with Toshiba, as well as a two year protection scam plan with the seller.
