Katie,
You would get a warning letter first saying to watch your returns.
At Bokes, sorry they closed your account but why were you letting so many people use your account?

Katie,
That is not excessive returns. And 2 of those were Amazon not third party vendors.
3 is not excessive. The person that got the letter had 16 returns. Mostly cheap third party vendor stuff. So quit worrying.
Defective kindles are different from I just didn't like this case.
So don't worry. And don't listen to the scare-mongers. Heck HarryT returned an expensive lens or two and Amazon never batted an eye.
We had two orders never delivered and no letter.

I think its high 13 order 3 returns
Problem is Know one knows what Amazon counting or not counting. IF its Only the problems with 3rd party sellers ... Why don't they just Close them & Stop dealing with the mess? My returns would have been higher IF I Returned the car keyless lock thing out of 2 only 1 works! Or the TV remote that worked fine for a 10 days then Quit! I wont cause I Don't want to Lose my digital things. Plus I betting they blame me or want to charge me for reshelving fees! Had that happen Twice!
No Amazon Not my Favorite place to Shop!

I live in a retirement home in a rural area and I'm the only one here with an Amazon account. I'm one of the few with a computer and internet access. Most of the tenants, like me, have no car and living in a town of 3,000 shopping is limited even if we can get to the store. Amazon makes life a lot easier.

I don't let anyone use my account. I'm the only one with access to it. But probably half my purchases are things my neighbors ask me to buy for them. I have a Prime account so there's usually no shipping and there's no tax and most things get here in 2 days. It's really great. And I get to be the old meanie that I am and everyone still pretends to like me.

No. You had 1 return.
Defective kindles don't count. By the way digital orders count as orders too.
So quit worrying. Oh and the scare monger got the same letter the year before.
Now as I told her if you are that worried, quit shopping at Amazon.

It would be nice to know and you all have me fretting a bit now Up until a couple of weeks ago, I only had a single return to my name since 1999 (a PW1 with a dodgy screen which I exchanged).

However I've needed a number of replacements in recent weeks due to issues with the carrier: 1 order of long-stemmed glasses (3 packs of 2) which arrived broken and a week ago a box with 6 items, all separate orders, which was shown as out for delivery and then updated to damaged in transit will not be delivered.
So in all 9 items replaced in the space of 10 days or so but that's out of a truckload of orders in the last month (60+ to take advantage of the £3 no-rush digital credits which ran for a while) so
I did take a picture of my nice little pile of glass before disposing of it and screenshots of the delivery tracking of the other parcel showing that it wouldn't be delivered due to it getting damaged.

Though as far as digital content from Amazon goes, I only have ebooks (all Alf'ed and backed up) and mp3s (all backed up too) - no audio books or movies for me to worry about.

Please note,
The person that got the warning was returning because they didn't like it. They were not returning broken or defective stuff.
Amazon knows the difference.
So quit worrying. Besides they didn't close her account, just sent her a letter to watch her returns.

Are you sure Amazon knows (or cares about) the difference? I've always had the uneasy feeling that it's all a numbers game and that they don't bother to distinguish between "I changed my mind" and "it arrived broken". The cost of losing a few good customers is probably less than the cost of inspecting returns would be.

I'm a little paranoid now and that works in Amazon's favor; I don't usually return defective items if they're inexpensive.

Jon, are you aware that there is a big difference between a blacklisted Kindle and a working Kindle that is just unable to be registered to an account that has been deactivated?

Blacklisted Kindle is a Kindle that has been reported stolen.
And even blacklisted Kindle can be used to read side-loaded books, just not DRMed content directly from Amazon (without de-DRMing first).

It is all just a numbers game, numbers and value of refunds. Amazon don't care about the reasons for a return.

I didn't, as Cinisajoy put it 'The person that got the warning was returning because they didn't like it. They were not returning broken or defective stuff.'' Most of my returns were cheap third party device cases that didn't fit. Third party seller returns seem to be the ones Amazon don't like for some reason. Also high value, although I've never bought expensive items from Amazon, let alone returned them.

Replacements should be okay as they don't involve an actual refund, but any returns are fair game to Amazon.

I am also not "scare-mongering" either. Another of Cinisajoy's comments.

We only buy items that are unlikely to be an issue, CDs, DVDs etc, plus Kindle books of course, we have never returned a single kindle book. I still buy a lot as I want to protect our Amazon account and am trying to reverse the stats they have on us. 81 paid orders since the letter and we haven't returned a single item.

I think the letters only come out in September when Amazon must do an annual audit.

We don't know if Amazon would have blacklisted the Kindle so it cannot be registered to a different account. So it needs to be tested with a working account to see if it can be registered. Do you know for sure if this Kindle is blacklisted or not? I don't and until that's figured out, it should not be sold until it is found that it is not blacklisted.
