I had an account that was closed some time ago. The policy then was that I can't link any devices to the account. The only way to access my Kindle content was to access it through amazon cloud reader, which sucks

I wouldn't like this to be my only option either. I guess whenever Amazon comes back with an answer we may need to ask for further clarification of what access to your digital content means. Exactly how would you be able to access it.

I don't expect Pdurrant to ever get a proper answer. It's a subject Amazon hopes will never become a big enough problem to need a definative set of rules. Any customer who spends money with Amazon on any digital media or device that plays/accesses that media needs to be aware of the risks and take whatever precutions they deem necessary.

At eschwartz,
I have pretty much lost everything in two divorces. I don't think books or other trivial stuff was even thought about. |

Why would you let your son format over all your data?

![]() I know we're supposed to be discussing the narrow topic of account closures and how they affect our digital media but it seems to me that in that situation the only practical difference between digital media and any other purchases is DRM, so it's hard to get very far into the discussion without bumping into that. And once there, it's hard not to think of other scenarios that would result in the loss of digital media for anyone who doesn't strip DRM for one reason or another. And I know all that's not just Amazon, but Amazon has such a large part of the ebook market that most issues with digital libraries are going to involve Amazon. |

![]() My husband and I are both retired and are adjusting to a significant reduction in income, space, and material goods. Fortunately, we've been able to accumulate a pretty large digital library; I now have just about all of my favorite series in ebook form. It's enormously comforting to me to know that at least I won't run out of reading material for the rest of my life. ![]() |

Amazon closed my account last month. I had the account for over 10 years. I order for family and friends - we ordered items on a weekly basis and I have had some returns over the years- not a crazy amount and they were all legit. In fact- it was the main reason I used Amazon so much. I knew I could return without hassle.
That said- I returned a high priced pair of headphones. They were defective. Within a week Amazon closed my account. I protested. They said sorry- you're done. They told me I would still have access to my digital content on my Amazon tv and kindle. This statement was included in the email from Amazon. Last week I tried to sign into my kindle account on my iPad and it will not allow me access. I contacted Amazon and they have no record of my account and told me to open a new account. we're dealing with a dictatorship. And soon they will be the only game in town. They can limit the amount of returns? The ratio of my returns vs items kept was maybe 1 out of 50. I do believe it was the return of the big ticket item that black flagged me. Another family member opened own account and I can order through them- but I choose not to. They got enough of my cash. I switched back to Barnes and Noble nook for books. And even some iBooks. Amazon is not the only game in town just yet. Last edited by Bokes; 12-25-2015 at 09:17 AM. |

Blokes, I'm sorry about your account with Amazon.
Kobo would be a better bet than Barnes and Noble and ibooks. With Kobo you can download your ebooks, liberate them, and store them as a back up. |

I was a bit miffed because I had a few books purchased on my kindle that I didn't read yet. Not to mention the kindle itself which is now useless to me and the expensive suede cover I bought. I really spent a lot of my $ with Amazon. But they just closed the account. According to Amazon- I returned a few too many items. So be it. And the high priced item was a third party vendor- why they even cared- I don't know. I actually don't worry about it much- it has actually saved me some $$$. but I saw this thread and it did get my dander up a bit. ![]() |
