It really annoys me, though. As you may know I'm a keen photographer, and earlier this year I bought a "semi-professional" Nikon DSLR, which is a fiendishly complex device, with literally hundreds of different configuration options. It came with a manual about a quarter the size of the older Nikon I bought about three years ago, despite being a hugely more complex device. How people are supposed to learn to use these things without buying expensive third-party books (which is what I ended up doing) really baffles me.

Oh yes there was a link to download a pdf of the 856 page manual. Yes I did. Most unfriendly manual. Apparently they just scanned the paper copy. Note this is for a 2015 not a 1977 vehicle. Oh and just so one knows where they hid the jack was on page 657. The stupid user guide for 3 different vehicles said it might be in a door, or under the back seat or under the driver's seat. Nope, it was under the passenger seat. Last edited by Cinisajoy; 12-18-2015 at 12:57 PM. |

Every time I go home I close the 50+ safari tabs she has opened. I load her reading apps up with new books. Update the OS and the apps. Then she's good to go until the next time I come home. |

Quote from the WP: In another experiment, she had adults use iPads at full brightness for two hours and measured their melatonin levels with saliva samples. One hour of use didn’t significantly curtail melatonin release, but two hours’ did.

Who reads their ipad on full brightness when inside the house at all, let alone for 2 straight hours before trying to go to sleep. I'm telling you - these studies aren't "science", they are sensationalism. Anything to grab headlines. Before that the story talked about conclusions the "scientists" came to from SURVEYS of how long parents THINK their teens are sleeping. Really? Why, that's "hard core science", let's alert the media and get everyone worked up. |

You might be interested in Googling for "zap colors bookmarklet". I've been using it for years to strip the colors from websites with black backgrounds and white or other light font (which otherwise triggers a headache if I read for more than a few minutes).

But Harry, there is a whole (official) after market for 'How to get the most out of your ____' I have a (dead tree) book for the F4 (I was dreaming back then). That would Kill a lucrative market.M$ does it. Oracle does it. Cisco does it... (Ansel Adams, I am not )My first SLR was a Pentax (Asahi) Spotmatic. Match needle ttl, Replaced with a Mamiya Secor DTL1000 dual ttl (used all my Pentax lenses). neither had much of a manual (thickness). You were expected to know how to take pictures with an adjustable camera. The pamphlet covered the location of the controls, basic care And I have the PDF for my lowly Nikon L14 (how far I have fallen )

I liked my Kindle K3 when I got it (with e-ink). It used very little battery power and could hold hundreds of books. But I like my tablet more, because it's a full operating system and I can do so much more with it.

I think the market for e-ink readers will be very small and highly specialized. Maybe some used ones will be donated to Africa so people/children can learn to read, do math, etc. |

I believe there will be a market for e-ink, I have had e-ink, and tablets with ebook readers, and I have tried so many different reading apps. My issues were not with what the apps provide, or even the different colors or fonts, my issues are with the LCD and the backlights in general. My eyes cannot deal with LCD or LED displays and backlights for more than maybe 30 minutes at a time. I love to read and there are times I will read for many hours at a time with the e-ink display. Yes I know many people are not bothered by the backlight displays but there are a lot that they are. I also love the outdoors and I have not found a backlight display that I can read outside. The closes I have found is the IPad air 2. And I still can not read for more than 20 or 25 minutes with it. If I have to I will end up getting me spare e-ink devices so I have backups.

Most places in Africa have very limited electricity. They have greater needs than sending them used stuff they really can't use. No internet, limited electricity. They need food not electronics. And how many Native African e-books are there? How are you going to do math on an ereader? There are poor children in the US too. Why don't you donate to your local community on the electronics?
