Invested in Sony but....

Not rehashing the Sony fiasco, however I have several Sony readers as well as a huge library of books. I'm not familiar with kobo readers but my son wants a reader for Christmas and most of the books on his list I already have so do I shop for a good deal on a Sony reader or just get a kobo?

A Kobo Glo HD or Kobo Aura H2O would do very well. Better than Sony. In fact, once you see his Kobo, you'll want one. I've owned a 500, 505, 650, & T1. Now I have an H2O.

The only Sony Readers you can get are either overstock, refurbished, or used. Chances of getting new is not good. Kobo is a better choice (IMHO).

I thought all Sony customers had their libraries (with certain rare exceptions) transferred to the Kobo store? Am I mis-remembering?

Yes everything transfered to kobo so no DRM issues, just wasn't sure how stable kobo was in the market. Didn't want to hop on another sinking ship so to speak.

Kobo is very stable. If they were not stable, I would not have bought last year (at Thanksgiving).

You're probably far better to buy a Kobo Glo HD for your son than to buy a Sony reader that is no longer supported. Your other option is to look at buying an "independent" ereader like a Pocketbook or Onyx but they aren't as readily available.

In the US, Pocketbook or Onyx are going to be a lot more expensive than Kobo.

Good to know, Kobo was just coming on the scene last time I was researching readers. I'm thinking of picking up a N905 series for my son. I just can't part with any of my Sony readers.

Kobo was bought by Rakuten a year or two ago. I think they were in pretty good shape even then and they've been getting good support since so they're probably in better shape now. At least there haven't been any stories about them having problems and I'd probably have seen those stories if there were any.

My personal preference is for Kindles but I have a couple of Kobo's as well and they're perfectly good devices. I wouldn't be the least bit worried about buying one.

The one that might be a sinking ship is the Nook. I recently bought their new model but the "sinking ship" idea wasn't part of my calculation. I hope Nook sticks around because I think Amazon will stay better with competition, but if they don't, and they might not, I'm still glad I got the Nook. I have lots and lots of books to read on it. I have no intention of buying books from B&N.

The danger, the real serious danger to us readers would be if Calibre went under. That would be a serious tragedy!

No reason the get rid of your Sony Keep them till they die!
