Interesting. I recently deleted everything on my WL under 6 hours. Perhaps I should set a different minimum.

Perhaps sub-consciously I'm limiting my audiobook purchases by setting this minimum. I figure I can always read shorter books if I really want.

Is Audible still offering free credits to new members? Or a free first month, or anything? My sister in interested in "Remembrance of things past" by Proust and is reg price $47 per volume. So a credit purchase would be worth it.

It's funny, I've gone through periods where I prioritized long books over short when buying audio books. But right now, I'm tending to try to avoid them if they're too long. After several books in 40+ hour range (and one over 60 hours) in the last year, I wold rather have a more reasonably sized read. I just don't have enough reading hours any more, since I don't commute and am not likely to get the weather for long walks.

Check out the second post in the thread. There are several different ways to get a free first month or more.

I don't pay attention to length per se, but I pay attention to price. This half-price sale is mostly disappointing, because almost everything on my wish list is still right around the price of a credit, so what's the point?

Re Sinatra: Did you read Kaplan's earlier volume on Frankie? I think I liked that even better, probably because I knew less about the early years. I would also give a slight edge to the narrator of the first volume. Can't get enough of Frank!

Yes, I did read the earlier volume and really liked it, which is the main reason I bought the second part. I know pretty much nothing about Frank, so it's all new to me. I find myself drawn to biographies of the rich and famous of this period (witness the avatar) because the history is so interesting. The Bob Hope bio is my next read (I picked it up for $10).

I'm glad to know that there are at least a few who think the way that I do. I'm another one who weighs cost against length. I'm not just interested in price, I'm interested in relative value--"bang for the buck."

My rule of thumb for audiobooks is that one is a good deal if the price of the audiobook is half or less of its number of hours of length. For example, a $10 audiobook would have to have at least 20 hours of length.

I also have rules of thumb for ebooks, based on the number of pages.

I agree; you always have to check the Whispersync options before going for a sale price. That goes for the Daily Deal, too.

At Audible for $2.51 for members is Hit Man, by Lawrence Block, the first in his Keller series.

I don't know anything about this book, which is rated 3.98 stars at GR, but I know Block is popular. Right now the book's regular price is only $5.03, so this refects the 50% off sale for members; I don't know if that regular price will persist or not, but this seemed like potentially good listening for a trivial sum.

It's a fun book, and well read. Short, but Block usually is. Like all Block's books, it revolves around a quirky character and circumstances. Perfect workout reading.

$2.98 for great YA Contemporary Cinderella Re-telling

Kelly Oram has put 6 of her YA ebooks on sale for 99c each. This includes Cinder & Ella, which has a Whispersync companion available for just $1.99.

I don't usually read Contemporary YA (being well outside the demographic) and am not generally fond of Hollywood/Movie Star books either. But I love fairy tale retellings, so I decided to give this one a chance and ended up really liking it.

Amazon ebook
Audible book

"Cinder458: Your blogaversary is coming up, right?
EllaTheRealHero: Do all those Hollywood friends of yours know you use words like blogaversary?
Cinder458: Of course not. I need your address. Got you a blogaversary present.

Cinder got me a gift?
My heart flipped.
Not that I was in love with my Internet best friend or anything. That would be utterly ridiculous. The boy was cocky and stubborn and argued with everything I said just to be infuriating. He also had lots of money, dated models—which meant he had to be hot—and was a closet book nerd.
Funny, rich, hot, confident, book lover. Definitely not my type. Nope. Not at all.
Yeah, okay, fine, so he wasn’t my type by default because he lived in California and I live in Massachusetts. Whatever.

Cinder458: Hello? Ella?? Address??
EllaTheRealHero: I don’t give out my address to creepy Internet stalkers.
Cinder458: I guess you don’t want this autographed first-edition hardback of The Druid Prince, then. Shame. I had it signed it to Ellamara when I met L.P. Morgan at FantasyCon last week, so I can’t try to impress any other girls with it.

Not my type.
Not. My. Type.

What would you do if your anonymous Internet best friend turned out to be Hollywood’s hottest celebrity?

It’s been almost a year since eighteen-year-old Ella Rodriguez was in a car accident that left her crippled, scarred, and without a mother. After a very difficult recovery, she’s been uprooted across the country and forced into the custody of a father that abandoned her when she was a young child. If Ella wants to escape her father’s home and her awful new stepfamily, she must convince her doctors that she’s capable, both physically and emotionally, of living on her own. The problem is, she’s not ready yet. The only way she can think of to start healing is by reconnecting with the one person left in the world who’s ever meant anything to her—her anonymous Internet best friend, Cinder.

Hollywood sensation Brian Oliver has a reputation for being trouble. There’s major buzz around his performance in his upcoming film The Druid Prince, but his management team says he won’t make the transition from teen heartthrob to serious A-list actor unless he can prove he’s left his wild days behind and become a mature adult. In order to douse the flames on Brian’s bad-boy reputation, his management stages a fake engagement for him to his co-star Kaylee. Brian isn’t thrilled with the arrangement—or his fake fiancée—but decides he’ll suffer through it if it means he’ll get an Oscar nomination. Then a surprise email from an old Internet friend changes everything.

With a heartwarming online celebrity romance reminiscent of Jennifer E. Smith’s This Is What Happy Looks Like, bestselling young adult author Kelly Oram has struck gold with her new adult contemporary retelling of the timeless classic Cinderella."
