Although if I can't remember the book, then rereading it will give me the same enjoyment as the first time around... right? Win-win.

Tracking diversity is perhaps useful for purely sociopolitical purposes. But I don't care in the slightest.
Once I have read a book I generally am able to remember having read it before. But, I do enjoy rereading good books and do so all the time.

I reread too.

I was speaking specifically of rereading by accident because you can't remember if you read something or not.
Which some people say is a problem for them.

If I reread a book it is because I intend to.

I mark the date 'Read' in a custom column in Calibre

If I set the year Before 2000, it signals I quit reading (not my cuppa...)
2000 is the arbitrary date I used for any in my Paper book Library I documented in Calibre

I rarely Rate (other than I Quit )
I do use the Count Pages PI (adobe Page count) and Grade Level

Edit:
I also use Imprint instead of the BPH's name
Obsidian vs their owner

I keep a list on Goodreads of books read and abandoned. Included are brief thoughts as a memory aid. I also maintain a very simple spreadsheet of purchased titles so I know which books were bought and which borrowed from the library (so I know to delete those).

I love to reread good books. For example, I recently finished The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. I plan to reread it right before the second book in the series is published.

With ebooks I tick the read column in Calibre.

With print books, if I've properly catalogued and housed it -it's been read (or it's for my hubby and I have no interest in reading it).

I do keep a bit of an eye on the variety (basically genre, historical period, culture) of the books available for me to read on my devices so that whatever my mood there will be something to read but as a general rule I search out new-to-me books as my curiosity takes me rather then through a fixed policy. (how many University Presses offer free ebooks ? Oooh that looks interesting, and so does that one and that one and.... Cozy mysteries? that recommendation blog has a list of freebies! Wonder what's new at Gutenberg.ca? Is there an affordable translation of Journey to the West? What about the Norse Sagas? Let's see what Baen has to offer this month? ... ).

I track at Goodreads. I have a particular interest in books with Australian women writers, Aboriginal writers, and books involving writers and/or characters with disabilities, so I track those things along with a few other tags. These types of books are often not hyped much so I need to look for them specifically if I'm to find what I want to read. People also sometimes ask me for recs along these lines, so tracking them makes it easy to pull out the books I liked. (It's not for 'bragging rights', sheesh.) I also get lost in series if I don't track; and the tailored Goodreads newsletter tells me when an author I like has a new book coming out.

And I am extremely annoyed when an e-book reader device tries to track my reading. One example of such tracking is Kindle displaying how much time remains in a chapter. Kobo even collects the reading data and displays "Reading Life" awards. As if I was a little kid that needs to be motivated to read more, or something.

I am also annoyed when the manufacturers put in crap for integration with social networks instead of focusing on basic functionality, such as bearable typography or nested folders for storing books.

I have a custom column in Calibre for date first read. On the rare occasions I read a print book nowadays, I have a list in a Word document with the title/author/date read (but only for those books I think there is a possibility I will one day purchase in digital).

I track the number of books I read for the month/year. This includes complete rereads, but I don't track titles for rereads. I've been keeping a record of the number of books read for well over twenty years now.

Not sure that it does.

I read in different genres, but I don't track by that or by types of characters.

I like to check which page I'm on from time to time, to gauge how much I'm actually reading or staring off into the distance while my brain goes off on tangents.

  • Where I've got it (library, purchased-where and how much-, present, author page...)

I have a spreadsheet with one worksheet per year. I track title, author, date I finished reading, whether it's a repeat (and if so, how many times I've read it), a line or two about what I liked or didn't like about the book, and my rating from 1 to 5 stars (with half star increments). I only started tracking in January 2013, and I wish I'd done so years earlier. I like being able to look back on what I read, and my descriptions make it easier for me to recommend the ones I like to family and friends.

I use Goodreads to track my reading. I track title, author, rating, date first read (some stuff from years before I got on goodreads is not comprehensive and dates are estimated, going back to the early 1980s; I joined goodreads in late 2010), and genre (my own genre classification, which constitute my goodreads shelf). Some but not all books have a review also ranging from a few words to an extensive review. Before Goodreads I had a book journal in an online forum; I've downloaded the raw reviews but haven't computed the statistics for those except number of books read. I do track books read on Calibre, Scribd, and my Kindle, but those also are not comprehensive or dated--more out of convenience when looking to start a new-to-me book.

I think of reading diversity mostly from a genre perspective. I don't track author gender per se, but estimate from recent sampling that the overwhelming majority of what I read is by women authors (this is particularly true when mostly reading romance; I'm slowly moving from romance to more SF/F and that is bringing more male authors into my reading). I'm looking to bring more racial diversity into my reading (I already enjoy reading about sexual minorities), but I think of this in the sense of minority viewpoint characters rather than authors per se (I don't really pay attention to author bios unless I love the book first).
