Seeking epic non-series fantasy
I just finished The Elven by Bernhard Hennen and James Sullivan. The book is an epic fantasy that may be the best book I've read all year. I'd like to read something along the same lines, preferably something that can stand by itself.
Thanks for any suggestions. * I know that there are other books by these authors but the books were originally written in German and I don't think my German is adequate. |

Have you read 'The Stone and the Flute' by Hans Bemmann?
It's a standalone book that is a good fantasy tale. |

I highly recommend I Shall Seal the Heavens It's slow at first but it's probably one of the best epic fantasy series I have read (on par with LOTR and A Song of Ice and Fire). You can read the review here if you like http://www.novelupdates.com/series/i...l-the-heavens/ Rating(4.7 / 5.0, 245 votes) 5 84% (206 votes) 4 10% (24 votes) 3 2% (6 votes) 2 1% (2 votes) 1 3% (7 votes) |

The Once and Future King by T.H. White?
![]() The Princess Bride by William Goldman The Paladin by C.J. Cherryh The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien Tarzan of the Apes (unabridged) by Edgar Rice Burroughs Almost everything Terry Pratchett wrote is standalone. I heartily recommend any of his first 30 or so books - particularly Wyrd Sisters, Guards! Guards!, Moving Pictures, Small Gods and Pyramids. I warn you though, it will be very difficult to eat just one. There are a number of small book trilogies (try Corum) by Michael Moorcock, an author many have forgotten. Discworld is not standalone. And don't go on about reading out of published order (which is the correct order to read Discworld for the first time).

The War of Flowers from Tad Williams. Williams is a great writer, and this book is pretty great.
There is Gloriana, or The Unfulfill'd Queen from Moorcock. The Scar from China Miéville. |

Try 'The Redemption of Althalus' by David & Leigh Eddings.

Discworld is not a "book". I'm not suggesting reading the books willy-nilly. You have an opinion. Keep your blessed "instructions" to yourself.

I haven't read Elven, but Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson might suit. Plus its free using the Creative Commons license. Elantris may or may not also count since he released a novella in the same world a few years back.
Sanderson's worlds aren't stereotypical but the underpinnings generally fit the usual fantasy formula. |
