There are no trace logs. The Glo doesn't crash though, so I wouldn't expect any.

The Kobo Tsukushi Mincho is an extremely large font, 15MB, so it could be that lack of memory is an issue on older devices but not newer ones. I also have a lot of other fonts sideloaded, no problems with any of them, but none are anywhere near as large as Kobo Tsukushi Mincho.

What do you think the purpose of it was, if not for people whose registration is broken without a third-party hack?

And it is completely obvious that they will see the exact same bug.

...

Unless, of course, you are suggesting that there is no way for someone's registration to be broken, unless they were using the third-party hack.

But that would mean this was designed purely to screw people using the hack.
In which case there is due cause to be pissed at Kobo.

...

Go ahead. Pick your poison.

In which case the user would simply follow the prompts and reregister/re-sync their device, which seems to be the failsafe in this instance. The only reason you're encountering this "bug which isn't actually a bug" is because you're trying to bypass the normal function of your reader.

I'm disappointed that PDF performance still hasn't been restored to 3.2 levels. Other then that (which will probably only get fixed when Kobo updates RMSDK again) seems like a nice release. I never bother with changing fonts, only sizes, so the Tsukushi bug will never bite me.

No...the only reason eschwartz is experiencing this bug is that he is commenting on a device he does not own.

Must be just me but I can't understand this first-world problem re: registering a Kobo.

I'm pretty privacy minded, but part of the reason for buying a Kobo was access to the book store. By design, that sort of requires an account.

If I wanted a reader free of anybody's control, I'd buy another make. But complaining about this seems to ignore the fact that Kobo are trying to create an infrastructure more tailored to the people who want to one-click use their devices a-la the Amazon infrastructure - which is obviously a successful model to follow considering Amazon's success.

There are still many mistakes in the Turkish translation. I wonder what kind of a person they employed for such sloppy work...

I'm quite privacy minded, but for me this had nothing to do with privacy. I reformat every book I buy to make it easier for me to read, so I sideload everything. My Kobo was unregistered just so I didn't have to deal with the hoops involved in keeping my purchases from showing up twice (the purchased version and sideloaded version). I recognize that I'm not the typical user in this regard, at least not outside of these forums, and this isn't a big deal to many people who'd prefer the Amazon-like experience. That being said, it falls under the category of minor annoyance to me, not something to actually make me angry at Kobo. Life is short; I can shrug over this and deal with it.

I'm also very privacy conscious, but I didn't mind signing up for an account when I got my first Kobo, it was a very very minor annoyance. But there's no personal details, no billing info, absolutely nothing but the email address, so I don't understand why some are so against it, especially when Kindles require linking to Amazon accounts.

Since you also buy from Kobo and I can understand you not wanting the hassle of double books, but why not just create a 2nd Kobo account for the reader only with a different email address, one you never make a purchase from. That would solve the problem of the double book downloads and end the hassle of trying to keep the reader unregistered.

Like you, I only purchase my books through my PC and sideload all books. Nothing is so urgent I need to download it to my reader right then and there.

That's an excellent idea, and I don't know why I didn't think of it myself. I have my own domain and generate standalone email addresses for other reasons (also not privacy related). There's no reason not to do so for this as well. Thanks for the suggestion!

@delph, I purchase a lot of books at Kobo... but never at the email address I've registered my Kobo. I'm not interested in synchronizing the books.

If you put the book in the recycle bin it will be kept on your account but will never be send to your reader during sync, so it will never send a book that you already have sideloaded. If you restore it from the recycle bin,it will be send on next sync, so you have complete power about every book.

No, at least not normally. But there are some cases where a setting scale changes, and then the old settings get translated to the new scale during the upgrade.

For example, in firmware 3.12.1 there were 40 font size settings ranging from 12 to 90 and including size 25. Then in 3.13.1 the scale was increased to 48 sizes ranging from 12 to 150 for the HD devices, but although the spacing of the new scale as more uniform overall, it didn't include a size 25. So if you had a book set to font size 25 I think it would have been changed during upgrade, to 24 or 26.

With this firmware version, if you had any books set to use Gothic or Ryumin fonts then their settings will be changed to use the replacement Kobo UD Kakugo and Kobo Tsukushi Mincho fonts instead.

My Kobo Aura is filled with over 600 free and public domain books, and the only time I use the sync feature is when I want to download a new firmware.
