I don't particularly care what passers-by think of my reading habits as long as they don't share those thoughts. If they're going to comment, I consider them rude. I don't believe that books are socially appropriate conversation starters.

I use my reader to read. I could care less what anyone thinks about what I read.

I'm not bothered at all whether people know what I'm reading.
I use ereaders purely for the convenience that they are in so many ways. |

I find ereaders convenient in that people cannot "investigate" what I am reading... which for some reason, everyone always seems to be fascinated about what book I am reading!
![]() It tends to interrupt, you know, the "reading" part. ![]() (Obviously that is not my only reason for using an ereader. It isn't even one of the main reasons.) Clearly I don't actually care if they know what I am reading ![]() |

I'm not using my e-reader to hide what I'm reading, but I like that people don't see what I'm reading, especially when I'm out in public. Some of the stuff I read can make me look snooty or pretentious, so I'd rather have people think I'm reading a juicy thriller or something.
(Remember when Bush caught some grief for carrying around a copy of Camus' The Stranger? Wouldn't have been a problem if he'd had a kindle.) |

I admit it. I've been scarred by the results of openly reading _Sex and Temperament _ in highschool. Having what seems like everyone comment and having to explain yet again what the books was about it made for a long day.
So there is material that I wouldn't read in paper form around those who might ask intrusive questions -there are times when I wouldn't mind explaining what I'm reading but not many. |

My view is entirely the opposite - I like nothing better than to have people talk to me about books.

I started out with my K3 when i was 17. I got it for Christmas 2010 and received it with a mixture of horror and confusion. What the hell was this... black rectangular thing? And, Ohmygodit'stheendofbooksmyfavouritethingsever. Anyway, I left it in its box, on the bottom shelf of my bedside table, and didn't open it again until June/July time. I then realised the potential for reading books easily, and more importantly, particularly at the time, to read them without my dad knowing what I was reading. I could now read fantasy and sci-fi without receiving the usual comments of "you should read something other than that stuff"; "that's not real literature"; "that doesn't broaden your mind"; "fantasy's all a copy of Tolkein and therefore worse". As a 17 yr old minor, I couldn't really tell him to keep his frankly stupid and biased opinions to himself, but it did allow me to enjoy my choice of reading without the aggro.

I wouldn't mind being interrupted whilst reading if someone was interested in discussing what I was reading.
I love reading, but I also love chatting to people, especially on long journeys. |

I'm more than happy to talk about what I'm reading -- but not if somebody is going to make a comment whilst I'm reading it. Headphones and a book are an almost-universal signal to "please leave me alone", and yet some people don't get the message... I've even had people tug on my headphone cord to talk to me about what I'm reading on public transit, and I don't live in a country where that would be considered culturally appropriate.
