				PW2 in strange state

I posted this over in the Mr. Packages forum, figured I would get a better response here.

I went to install the ScreenSavers Hack on my PW2. Saw the link for the Package installer. Installed the KUAL extension, put the .bin file into /mrpackages and told KUAL to install it. It claimed success, said "restarting UI" and the Kindle rebooted. It gets ~90% of the way through the reboot and hangs. Sits there for a while, then reboots and hangs again. Repeat. Plugging in a USB connection to a computer, the Kindle shows up as a drive. After I eject it seems to work normally. So I placed the uninstall file into /mrpackages and used KUAL to do Mr Packages install. Again the reboot and hang. Deleted the /mrpackages and extensions/MRInstaller folders and did a manual restart. Same problem. So, I'm not adding/removing ANYthing at this point until I get this resolved. Would appreciate suggestions on how to proceed. USBNetworking works fine and I am comfortable at the command line. Help? Last edited by Phazed; 11-25-2015 at 02:10 PM. Reason: Making more precise |

Moved to the Kindle dev forum which is where, as Katie says, you'll get help with this.

I would guess that he means a "hold the power switch in for 30 seconds" reboot.

The same thing (what looks like a 'hang')? If so, put it on a wall charger to keep it powered and wait, at least a day or two. It is evidently trying to recover file system errors on the flash memory with bad blocks - a very slow process. |

Loading a book via Calibre works normally.

Note that when the problem occurs, the Kindle hangs for about a minute, then reboots. I"m suspecting that something got left as a startup script, I'm just not sure where to look. |

Just use your file manager to copy a book to kindle:/documents - Do a "safely remove" or "eject" the USB storage - Re-start - Connect to pc - Is the book still in kindle:/documents? Can you still open the book (on the kindle, not the pc). |

Yes, the book is there and opens normally on the Kindle.

As far as I can tell, once I plug in the Kindle, everything works just fine. The only issue is on boot, which is why I suspect a startup script. I just did a restart. The "hang" lasts 95 seconds. As long as I plug in the USB connection to the computer during that time, it shows up as a device on the PC. Then, if I eject it, the Kindle works perfectly. The problem occurs exclusively on restart. Another test and more information. It's a network issue. If I enable Airplane mode and restart, the "hang" lasts about 10 seconds and the Kindle comes up normally. Good to know that I have a work around. While I do have bbb installed for firewalls, there was no problem with anything until attempting to install the screen saver hack. From /var/log/messages: Code:

In USB storage mode, add this filename to the root directory of USB storage (alongside the /documents directory): WIFI_NO_NET_PROBE That exact spelling, capitalization, no extension no contents. I may have forgotten to mention the adding of that flag filename in the BBB directions (it was a long time ago). The interaction of the screensaver changes with the rest of the operation - let NiLuJe handle that one. PS: You did get the screensaver package from NiLuJe's snapshot thread, didn't you? No change in behavior.

Did a touch of /mnt/us/WIFI_NO_NET_PROBE as I did not see that in the instructions for bbb. In airplane mode, I still see a 7-8 second pause at the same "hang" point but everything comes up normally: Code:
	ls -l /mnt/us/WIFI_NO_NET_PROBE -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Nov 25 16:56 /mnt/us/WIFI_NO_NET_PROBE I installed/removed the screen saver hack from this link: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=195474 |

On this forum's index page, just below the final blue bar, find:

Prefix dropdown list, set to "tools" - Click the "show threads" button - Scroll down to the thread of NiLuJe's snapshots, click thread title - Scroll down to the screensaver hack - Use that one instead of the old (last August) one. |
