You can go download the ISO, but if you don't want it anyway then why do you even care?
Make sure all of the hardware works with Win 10. Also make sure your computer is fully updated.

That one is critical.
Otherwise it will start to upgrade and stop, dropping you back to the original OS without any error message.

Strange question maybe, but does anyone else have Firefox and Thunderbird icons with a grey-brown background, when pinned to the right of the Start Menu, after the November update?

IE is gray too (I have it pinned, though I almost never use it). And FreeFileSync is now always blue-green...
Strange indeed.

Do you have "Settings>Personalisation>Colours>Automaticall y pick an accent colour from my background" turned On?

If it is the default pick is brown.

EDIT: If this is what happened keep in mind that if one then switches the "Automatically pick..." switch to "Off", the accent colour does not automatically go back to the Windows default accent colour (blue), one has to then select that (or any other colour one wants instead).

This. Does the OP have Windows Update turned off? I know there was a way to hid upgrade package that installed the tray icon...I have it hidden in my list of updates because I didn't want to be nagged.

While naysayers continue to come up with reason after bogus reason for Windows users to avoid Windows 10, based on my experience over the four months since its release, it's now Microsoft's best operating system to date.

But four months on and Windows 10 feels like completely different. Not only has the operating system improved thanks to updates (the November update in particular made a huge difference), but so have drivers and third-party software (which make a huge difference to stability).

Some of these fixes and improvements will be down to the telemetry that Microsoft collects from crashing Windows 10 machines.

In my experience most of the problems that people have with Windows 10 come down to upgrading systems that were already suffering from complications.
More at the source.

Yeah.

There's always a small risk associated with any update, whether that be an operating system update, an update for a software package, or updates for antivirus or other security apps. No matter how much care the software maker takes, duff updates do occasionally slip out into the wild. Is this a valid reason to not keep Windows updated?

No.

The bottom line is that rapid patching is the single best way to keep a system secure whether it's Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS or Android. To recommend that users indefinitely delay installing updates is irresponsible and down right dangerous.
The guy is completely missing the point. That isn't even the actual argument made by people who want to be able to control updating.

Microsoft's best OS yet?

I'll call it that when they get their fracking font-sizes under control; namely, use ONE, or maybe TWO font-sizes for the operating system, so I can actually set a normal size to use. Now they're all over the place. Using a small font size makes the small fonts too small, and using a larger font size so I can read the small fonts makes the large fonts huge.

I have three pet-peeves with Windows 10:
1. Data hungry when using default settings
2. User interface inflexibility (restriced fonts/sizes and colors, where older versions of Windows had more options... more options the older the version is...)
3. It seems to be in a morphing state, i.e., constantly changing

Point 3 was one of the main points why I use Windows: after you install it, it basically doesn't change until the next version comes out, and it's supported for 10 years. Also, it's backward and forward compatible with almost everything ever written in the last 20 years.

If I wanted a system that's always changing, I'd run Debian Linux Testing or even Arch.

Now it might actually be better to start looking into LTS-versions of Linux (supported for 3-5 years) that have applications backported to them, and use Windows as a gaming console, and the few things I just can't get done on Linux.

Well seems like we're at the point where people just want to nit-pick it to death. I love it myself. I agree with the assessment that it was the smoothest upgrade and best yet. And with that I'll end my watch on this thread.

I'd like to ask some advice, please. The reason I'm still on Windows 7 is that I rely on a Dell MFD which unfortunately is unsupported with Windows 8 and 10. Can anyone recommend a good MFD that works well with Windows 10? When I say "good" I mean not outrageously expensive ink and good colour and black printing.

Thanks!
