Usually it was the cover that attracted me when I was perusing the racks in the local book store. Now it is the story line and sometimes the reviews. Miles Naismith Vorkosigan is my favorite character of all the books I've read, Belisarius would be second, and LMB has done a wonderful job creating and presenting the stories to us. I'm not a fan of the new covers either...sigh...they are just as important today as they have always been. I'd have the devil's own time trying to choose a favorite but if push came to shove I'd have to choose "A Civil Campaign". |

A Regency Romance Comedy of manners no less. (With politics, bioengineered cockroaches, baby farms, and gene-level sex changes thrown in. But still, very romantic, very funny.) My problem with that cover and the cover of the omnibus is that Miles isn't that tall! He likes his women tall but he isn't. Barely reaches their... ahem... collarbone. If you're doing a "realistic cover" the characters should be recognizably themselves. |

Um, no. The cover image is supposed to be the Emperor Gregor, and *His* fiance. The whole book dances around that already-in-the-works romance, which triggers several characters to attempt to get married. And while the romantic elements are strong, it's definitely SF, given the butterbugs. |

...but Larissa isn't blonde and skinny. And it would be an odd cover that focuses on the fifth or sixth most interesting couple in the story.

Accuracy in covers has long been a lost cause - they mostly try to tell the viewer the /kind/ of book, not the detail. As I remarked about a Regency that has girl with horse on the cover and text when she refused to buy a riding habit.

However, a lot of eBooks don't have a proper cover so for those eBooks, it's irrelevant if they open at the cover or not.

As long as we're responding to months-old posts: I'm almost entirely cover-blind. I read epubs--and even when their covers are thrust in front of me, I barely notice them. Don't get me wrong; I love visual art. It's just that I've got no use for art in my novels. I'm funny that way. I don't care how well a singer can dance, either. |
