I rarely have the time to read for pleasure during the day, but if I manage to free up a Sunday, I'll gladly spend the entire day curled up on the couch (or on the bank of the river near my house, if it's hot) reading.

I don't read most evenings, either, because I'm usually cooking and spending time catching up with my fiancee, or my presence is required for my raid team. It's a video game thing, and we rely on all our team mates attending according to our schedule.

This means that I generally read once everybody else is in bed, or when waiting for appointments. The Paperwhite has been a life-changer! When I had more time, I used to read five or six hours a day. These days, I only read about one hour a day.

Things should calm down once we're married and I've finished my degree.

I am fully in control of my vehicle when I am stopped. It isn't going anywhere. Trains here tend to be very long and very slow so I turn my engine off when I am stopped for a train.

Harry, being from England, is used to the microtrains that they have there. They pass through the crossing in a blink of an eye.

The US has trains that are miles long. Long enough to finish War and Peace.

It's irrelevant how long the train is. The issue is that British law requires you to be in control of your vehicle at all times when it's on the road, and hence doing things like reading, using a mobile phone, or even drinking from a bottle of water, are all illegal while stopped at traffic lights, railway crossings, and so on.

The law in the US varies from state to state. In the fine state of Georgia, where both Apache and I live, there is an exception to the law when parked. I'm pretty sure sitting at a railroad crossing with your engine turned off is considered parked. It wouldn't work well for me since I tend to block everything else out around me when I read. That's one of the big reasons I listen to audiobooks in the car, well that and I get car sick when I try to read in the car.

I have never been car sick. I grew up traveling in cars and doing a lot of reading. I do block things out while reading, but I have trained (pun intended) myself to become aware as the train exits the crossing.

I'd be a much more dangerous driver if I couldn't have my mammoth cup of morning coffee during my commute.

But I limit myself to imbibing life's blood fluids while driving. I haven't been tempted to order this handy product yet, helpful though the reviews are. I'm not up to such high-level multi-tasking.

P.S., I read at railroad crossings, also.

That product can be used to externally take in fluids.

I grew up reading in cars and do get car sick. I've found techniques to minimize it, but otherwise just accept it and still read when I'm a passenger.

I think that their speed varies up and down according to whether the engineer is reading a book, eating a meal, or pouring or drinking a cup of coffee.

I am sure that many in the geographically small countries who have not experienced them have no idea how long some of the trains can be in the likes of the USA and Australia. Murg didn't mention their road trains; they're long enough to make one drop one's sandwich or eReader with fright when driving if not come across them before.

There is a Train Yard in Town too. Try going anywhere when the trains are stopped on the crossings. They built a couple of overpasses downtown a few years ago to help alleviate the problem. It used to tack ambulances and fire engines 20 minutes to detour around the trains. A few years back a train blocked all four crossings on my side of town for about 7 hours. A College student passed out on the tracks a 2:30 AM and was killed by a train. The train could not be moved until the police were done with their investigation.

Trains here are typically a mile or more. In this town, they go through at about 65 mph.
About 22 miles from here they go around a bend at about 10 mph. And in another town, it is about walking speed.

I assume that books are also bigger in Texas?
