The Dying Hour (Jason Wade # 1) by Rick Mofina (from the daily BookBub email)
THE DYING HOUR introduces Jason Wade, a rookie crime reporter with The Seattle Mirror, a loner who grew up in the shadow of a brewery in one of the city's blue-collar neighborhoods. At The Seattle Mirror, he is competing for the single fulltime job being offered through the paper's intense intern program. But unlike the program's other young reporters, who attended big name schools and worked at other big metro dailies, Wade put himself through community college, and lacked the same experience. Wade struggles with his haunting past as he pursues the story of Karen Harding, a college student whose car was found abandoned on a lonely stretch of highway in the Pacific Northwest. How could this beloved young woman with the altrustic nature simply vanish? Wade battles mounting odds and cut-throat competition to unearth the truth behind Karen Harding's disturbing case. Her disappearance is a story he cannot give up, never realizing the toll it could exact from him. THE DYING HOUR! is a bone-chilling, mesmorizing page-turner that introduces readers to an all-too-human young hero who journeys into the darkest regions of the human heart to confront a nightmare.

Free on Amazon UK - CUT DEAD: A DI Charlotte Savage Novel by Mark Sennen

‘He could be out there right now. Passing you on the street. You’d never know …’

DI Charlotte Savage is back, chasing a killer who was last at large ten years ago, a killer they presumed dead …
Now he’s back and more dangerous than ever.

When three headless bodies are found mutilated in a pit, it’s a particularly challenging case for DI Savage and her team. The victims bear the hallmarks of a killer who butchered girls to their death; a killer who was never caught.

Could this be a copycat or has the original murderer resurfaced? With a steady stream of bodies arriving at the morgue and gruesome secrets from the past emerging DI Savage is up against it to find the killer before he strikes again?

Archer Mayor appears to be cycling two-by-two through his Joe Gunther police procedural series again on US Kindle Countdown. Right now The Dark Root ($1.99) and Occam's Razor ($2.99) are on sale for about 3 more days. I read a few of these when they first came out back in DTB days, and am now slowly working my way through and enjoying the series again.

Dark Root: http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Root-Gunt...dp/B00C3LLRFG/
Spoiler:
Quote:
A brutal home invasion shocks Brattleboro's small Asian community, but no one's talking. Undeterred, Joe Gunther digs deeper and discovers a cross-border smuggling route carrying drugs, contraband, and illegal aliens into and out of Canada. Operating below the radar for years, competition between underworld rivals is bringing it into the light with deadly consequences. International jurisdiction is a complicated thing, and Gunther will have to collaborate with the FBI, the Border Patrol and the Mounties in the pursuit of justice.

Occam's Razor: http://www.amazon.com/Occams-Razor-G...dp/B00C3E0D9E/
Spoiler:
Quote:
The body was positioned so that the train neatly obliterated its head and hands. Dressed in a homeless man's clothes with empty pockets, it might easily be passed-off as an unfortunate John Doe. And yet… Joe Gunther has a knack for knowing when things don't quite add up, and the math in this case is all kinds of wrong. Add a toxic waste dumping scheme, a stabbing, and a whole lot of state politics… if Occam's razor were applied to Gunther's caseload, how many incisions would it make?

Three titles in Shelley Singer's Jake Samson & Rosie Vicente series are priced at $0.99 on US Kindle Countdown, although one is only for about 4 more hours. All then go to $1.99 for some unknown period of time, before going back to their "normal" price of $2.99. All have been free/on Countdown before, but if you've missed any of these, here's the info:

Samson's Deal is the first in the series and is on sale at $0.99 for about 2 more days. Info in previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=3058779

Full House is the third in the series and is on sale at $0.99 for only about 4 more hours. Info in previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=3075124

Royal Flush is the sixth in the series and is on sale at $0.99 for about 1 more day. Info in previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=3075124

And a few last US Kindle Countdown deals:

Hog Heaven by Ben Rehder is the seventh in the Blanco County series at $0.99 for about 3 1/2 more days. All of these titles were on Countdown a while back at the same time - now it looks as if he might be cycling through them one at a time, so if you want these but missed them before, you might keep an eye out.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Heaven-Blanco-...dp/B00DIMYVL6/
Spoiler:
Quote:
After a high-school football star dies in a late-night motorcycle collision with a wild pig, the boy’s wealthy father comes up with a creative scheme to rid Blanco County of the feral pests: He tattoos the ear of one particular pig, then offers a $50,000 reward for anyone who shoots it. Game warden John Marlin is not pleased—chiefly because the bounty is likely to bring a wave of poachers and trespassers to the area. The tension rises even higher when the death of the local boy turns out to be more complicated than it originally appeared. Fans of Ben Rehder’s earlier comic mysteries will be in heaven—Hog Heaven.

Dead in the Water is the fourth in the Rebecca Schwartz series by Julie Smith and is at $0.99 for about one more day before going up to $1.99 for an unknown amount of time. Smith's books tend to go free from time to time, so you'll have to decide whether to pay at this price.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Water-Reb...dp/B009OVDMJM/
Spoiler:
Quote:
WHAT'S THE ETIQUETTE WHEN YOUR HOSTESS IS ARRESTED FOR MURDER?

San Francisco lawyer Rebecca Schwartz has occasion to wonder when she and her weekend hostess, Marty Whitehead, find a body floating in the 30-foot kelp tower at the Monterey Aquarium, and Marty's promptly dragged off to the slammer.

Rebecca quickly grasps the Emily Post solution—sign on as Marty's lawyer, try to keep her client's two young kids out of the deep end, and somehow avoid drowning in the sea of lies gushing from Marty's mouth--and everyone else’s. There’s a lot of intrigue among the aquarium's oceangoing primates, as well as rumors of a pearl beyond price.

For Rebecca, the sea and all its animals have always held a huge attraction, but now her attention turns to a particularly fine specimen of homo sapiens--hot marine biologist Julio Soto. As her investigation picks up speed, she finds she better act fast to keep Julio from sleeping with the fishes he collects. Because if she doesn’t, he could be next in line for the shark tank—along with Rebecca herself.

Dead Broke is the fourth in the Bruce Kohler series by Elizabeth Zelvin. Zelvin's books also occasionally go free, so again, if you want it, you'll have to decide whether to pay for it, or chance waiting. It's at $0.99 now for about 1 more day, before going to $1.99 for an unknown amount of time.

Free on Amazon UK - Omens of Death by Nicholas Rhea

'Detective Inspector Montague Pluke is an extremely superstitious man. So when he notices the solitary crow upon the roof of No. 15 Padgett Grove — the home of Cyril and May Crowther — he knows it is an omen of death. As the officer in charge of the CID at Crickledale Sub-Divisional Police Station, Pluke has never solved a murder or arrested a killer. While he appreciates that the natural peace of Crickledale has contributed to this, it is Pluke’s ambition, before he retires, to solve a noteworthy murder. So when the naked body of a young woman is found at the local Druids’ Circle, it seems that fate is on Montague’s side. Stephen Winton, a photographer from nearby Fossford, is photographing the Circle for a tourist magazine when he makes the grisly discovery. Listed as one of the Nine Sites of Crickledale, the Druids’ Circle is rumoured to be the site of orgies, witchcraft and other bizarre goings-on after dark. Could the dead girl have been the victim of a black magic mass ritual or sacrificial killing? With no visible wounds or signs of a struggle, Montague believes that the young woman met her untimely end elsewhere and was then placed in the Circle. But why was she naked?
Unable to ignore the ill-omened message of the lone crow, Pluke decides to focus on the Crowther’s home at No. 15 Padgett Grove. When two more people die in suspicious circumstances, Montague Pluke is at last able to put his police training, together with his great knowledge of superstition, to good use ...'

Gone Baby Gone is the fourth in the Kenzie and Gennaro series by Dennis Lehane. It's $1.99 right now at Amazon US. No idea for how long...

Quote:
“Powerful and raw, harrowing, and unsentimental.”
Washington Post Book World

“Chilling, completely credible….[An] absolutely gripping story.”
Chicago Tribune

“Mr. Lehane delivers big time.”
Wall Street Journal

In Gone, Baby, Gone, the master of the new noir, New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island), vividly captures the complex beauty and darkness of working-class Boston. A gripping, deeply evocative thriller about the devastating secrets surrounding a little girl lost, featuring the popular detective team of Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, Gone, Baby, Gone was the basis for the critically acclaimed motion picture directed by Ben Affleck and starring Casey Affleck, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman.

The publisher, Le French Book, which specializes in English translations of French mysteries and thrillers, has two new books out and on sale at $0.99 at Amazon US for a brief time. In the email I received on Nov 22, Anne at Le French Book indicated that the $0.99 price on the two new books would be good for two days only (not sure whose time zone or starting precisely when), but this is probably pretty short-lived.

The books are:

A business magnate calls on wine expert Benjamin Cooker to kickstart his new wine business in Beaujolais, sparking bitter rivalries. Can the Winemaker Detective and his assistant keep calculating real estate agents, taciturn winegrowers, dubious wine merchants and suspicious deaths from delaying delivery of the world-famous Beaujolais Nouveau? Another adventure in this cozy mystery series set in France. A wine novel and a mystery.

White Leopard by Laurent Guillaume

Everything is possible and nothing is certain. A man torn between two continents finds himself in a dangerous confrontation between tradition and corruption. Solo is a former cop who ran away from a dark past in France to start his life over again in Bamako, Mali, as a PI. An ordinary case turns out to be not so ordinary. The drug mule gets her throat slit. The French lawyer is too beautiful and too well-informed. The cocaine is too plentiful. This is hard-boiled noir with a modern twist set in West Africa.

"A thrill ride of epic proportions—the real deal! The perfect combination of street smarts and literary talent." —Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries, the basis of the hit Netflix drama Longmire

"Fans of classic hard-boiled PI fiction will relish Guillame’s first book to be translated into English... He delivers a tale of high-level corruption that will resonate with James Ellroy readers.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY STARRED REVIEW
