The Vent and Rant Thread

A minor rant about my Kindle Paperwhite. The thing is designed to turn on whenever you open the cover that Amazon sells for it, which is great, I suppose, if you have the Kindle cover. I don't and I rarely use a cover these days, but when I do, I put it in my Oberon sleeve, which has a magnetic closure, which causes the device to turn on inside the sleeve. Worse still, every time I place it on my iPad, the magnet in the iPad causes it to turn on. It sure would be nice if Amazon had provided a means of turning off this convenient feature.

I had a smart cover for my tablet.
Hubby took another magnet, found the magnet and removed it.
So you can turn a smart cover into a regular cover if you don't mind a small hole on the inside of your cover.

You need to remember that by definition the average IQ is 100, and half the people are stupider than that.

Now I personally have met some people that have above average IQ's and in many ways they are dumber than a box of rocks.

In fairness, what Mudd continued on to say, in The Head Game, was that all of us are below average AT SOMETHING. In other words, not everyone is below average all the time (although, arguably, some certainly are); but all of us, with few exceptions, are below average at some skill or comprehension or capability. I know that's true for me; I'm skilled at a number of things, but a total doofus at others.

HOWEVER, yes, the IQ thing is also true, and that's enough to keep you in the fetal position for the rest of your natural-born life. And those folks VOTE, too. (no, mods, that's not a political comment).

The really bad part about the dumber than a box of rocks people is they will and do inform everyone of how smart they are. Especially if one calls them on their stupidity.

DRAT... Another bluetooth headset goes missing

I drive for a community care organization, so of course need to be reachable by cell phone. In Ontario it's the law that you have to be handsfree.

I was out this morning, and all was fine. Went back out to do Meals on Wheels driving and realized when I finished that my headset was gone

I dislike the in the ear type, and like the Motorola H730 so have yet another one on order from Amazon.

Maybe I need to figure out how to attach a lanyard to it at all times.

Dunning-Kruger. Grossly overused, in this day and age of the Net, but in this specific discussion, precisely applicable.

Never heard of it; *highly* applicable! I've often wondered, when I help people with their computers, how they can *possibly* write "computer literate" on their resumes, when they don't know how to find the desktop, or what a folder is. They only know the inside of MS Word. And they don't KNOW that. It drives me up the WALL.

Sigh.

On the subject of computer literate, when I worked at the college, a student needed a helper in Access. The first two helpers that were hired, the first one literally asked the professor how to turn on the computer and the second one asked how to find the program.
Needless to say the professor told the front office that she had to interview the next potential helper before approval.
The student wasn't too fond of the third helper but the professor loved the new one.
The student knew he would have to actually do the work to pass with the helper.
I know she asked the new potential helper if the helper knew access. The helper was honest and said not sure how well I know it but I made a card catalog.
The professor had seen the card catlog.

In all seriousness, I understand the feeling. I frequently lose small items -- and then find them again, usually after I've bought replacements.

I'm fortunate, in that my MINI Cooper itself is my bluetooth device. It's a bit harder to lose. Though I guess it's still small enough to mislay .....
