Hi VMurph,

I would wait until the next ereader comes out before you purchase another Voyage. It seems that whenever Amazon releases a new version, the old one goes on sale for a while.

Happy reading!

That's what I was hoping. But I don't know if Amazon actually continues to sell the previous model when the new one is released.

I know they will if the next release is a completely different model (like Paperwhite & Voyage). But if the next release is just a newer version Voyage, then the first one might disappear off their site. They did that when they changed the K4 and I think when they went from PW1 to PW2.

I know the first Voyage will still be available from third party sellers, but they're usually not Prime shipping. Besides I don't like using third party sellers for my Kindles.

PS: just to be clear, I'm not saying that I wouldn't want a Voyage 2. In fact, I think I would. Krazy4Katz post was about being able to get the first one at a discounted price.

And a little off topic...

Krazy4Katz, I assume you're a cat lover? I just wanted to mention that I am, too. I have SIX cats, and they are the reason I upgraded my Paperwhite to the Voyage. Hallelujah! No more CAT FUR stuck in the bezel!

LOL, no kidding, every two seconds I was finding cat fur stuck in the bezel. And I had to keep shutting my kindle OFF every time I pulled one out. Otherwise, I'd end up turning pages.

Thanks to the Voyager, I now spend more time READING instead of plucking cat fur from under the bezel.

What if the change is something you do like? You wait until the next model is announced and if you don't like it, you get the old one.

Maybe it could be something as simple as more internal storage. Maybe a heftier battery for longer between charges. It could be mostly the same with some worthwhile changes. We won't know until it happens.

I say wait until the new model is announced. Then you can decide if you like it enough to buy or you want to buy the current model. I've not known a time when Amazon announced a new model and had no stock of the old model. So you shouldn't have a problem getting the old model when it becomes the old model.

I know Apple doesn't actually replace the battery; they just give you a whole new refurbished device with a fresh battery in it. But at least it's like brand new condition and you're getting it for only $80 (outside warrantee) rather than paying hundreds for a whole new device.

Does Amazon have a battery replacement policy, too?
I haven't had a Kindle battery go bad but a neighbor had problems with his long out of warranty Kindle and called Amazon to see if they would repair it and they offered him a pretty generous discount on a refurbished replacement. I think it was close to half off but I don't really remember exactly. That's not quite the same as Apple's policy but it's about as good. Except that I'm not sure if it's actually a policy. It might depend on the mood of the support person at Amazon. I just don't know.

Oh absolutely; I would definitely want that. That's why I missed the recent Voyage sale. Because I was waiting to see if a new Voyage 2 was going to be released.

A newer version Voyage would be great. I think the misunderstanding is that we were discussing replacing it 5 or 10 years down the road. By THAT time, the voyage might be long gone and they'll surely be on a totally different Kindle model by then. And it could very well have too many bells and whistles, and something I don't like.

So they don't actually have any definitive plan or policy for replacing dead batteries?

Well my problem was deciding between waiting for the next revision, or getting the current version for $30 off. But that's moot now, since the sale is over...and because the battery issue has made me decide to not bother buying a backup at all. I'm just going to wait until my current kindle actually breaks and I actually need a new one.

I could've sworn that the original K4 and PW1 went on sale and sold out before the newer K4 and PW2 took their place.

Boy I'm so glad I got the original K4 before they changed it. I loved the page turn buttons and I hate that they basically turned it into a Kindle Touch. (plus, it only cost $49 )

No they don't. I don't think any companies that offer dedicated readers does.

Let's say that for each year a battery loses 25% of the capacity it has remaining. (I'm just making these numbers up, but it illustrates the point.) Then you will get this use out of it:

Year 1: 100%;
Year 2: 100 * 0.75 = 75%
Year 3: 75 * 0.75 = 56%
Year 4: 56 * 0.75 = 42%
Year 5: 42 * 0.75 = 31%

A laptop battery that starts out with 6 hours of usage will have declined to a maximum of two hours of use after 5 years. While still usable, it can be a pain in the neck.

A Kindle on the other hand, starting out with 6 weeks, will drop down to 2 weeks of usage. That's a huge drop, but an e-reader which lasts for two weeks is still perfectly usable.

I've noticed that, after three years, I'm starting to see the "Your Kindle is almost empty"-warning. Previously, I never saw it; I've always connected the reader to the computer to upload books before it appeared, keeping the Kindle charged perpetually. Now I don't seem to be able to manage this anymore. (I'm not reading slower or more books between charges AFAICT.)
Math is not entirely true,
To say year 1 you have 100%, year 2 only 75%, 3 50, and 4 25% would be more true,
Why?
Because you end up charging a 50% battery more frequently, than a new one!

I've always said this to my froends owning li-ion cellphones:
When you can charge it, keep it plugged in!

My friend, who is of the opinion to fully drain his li-ion before charging every month or two, went through 2 batteries already, and is always seen with a battery pack.
Me, I have my phone always plugged in, with a low power 800mA charger.
In the office, bedroom and car.
I basically only unplug it from the bedroom to the car, and car to the office.
I'm in my 3rd year on my original Samsung Galaxy Mega battery, which has between 75 to 80% of new capacity.

Yup, that's exactly who I use. They're awesome.

But as I pointed out earlier, DIY battery replacing was easy with older devices. My old (PRS-505) metal Sony reader, for example, had screws in the top and bottom edges that allowed the guts to just slide out like a sleeve.

Years ago we could replace the batteries and screens and even LCD displays in most readers, game systems and MP3 players. Not anymore. Newer devices that have non-replaceable batteries (even with tutorials) are extremely difficult to take apart without ruining them. I'm pretty handy with electronics and have always done my own repairs. But I looked at my Kindle Voyage and it's just too risky.
