Just putting that new ereader never coming out or buying a supply of a dozen or so current models into perspective thats all.

Anyways there WILL be a new voyage...you will not be using the current model 30 years from now and if kindles are still being made you will have the new better one. So i would save your money.
There might be a new Voyage, but I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

Depends what "soon" means to many people. Still there will be a new kindle for people to obsess over no need to squirrel away the current model.lol

That's true enough, but I suspect it will take a very long time. The only device that I have had with a nearly dead battery was my 9 year old Siemens S35i, and then replacing the battery was quite expensive.

Where is your proof that older people lose interest in things?
Half my problem with finding books is I have a very long TBR. (To be read)
All the readers I know are still reading because they now have time to read.

Now if I just looked at the neighbors, it could be said that computers, tablets, internet and books are totally useless. But that is a very small demographic.
I also talked to a woman the other day that had no clue how an ereader or even Amazon works.

Now note: I know just as many bibliophiles and gadgetophiles.

You're still making very good sense, Wolf, and I agree with everything you're saying. You're absolutely correct. And yet I still want that backup.

As for what good it is, it'll be there! It'll be MINE!!!

There are exceptions of course(william shater and dick van dyke are still enjoying lifebto its fullest) but not many old people are reading like mad by the end of their lives.(or doing anything except sitting and watching tv) Most people just lose their drive and motivations as they age.
I've been an avid reader all my life but I had to work long, hard hours so I always had a paperback in my back pocket or at least nearby for those few minutes I could sneak a few peeks at my book. Now I'm 75 and I've been retired over 20 years and I've read more in that 20 years than all the rest of my life put together. Probably 3/4 of the books I've read were in the past 20 years, in addition to re-reading a lot of the books I read when I was younger.

I live in a retirement home and being a gadget lover I have a bunch of older tablets and ereaders and MP3 players I no longer use and I put books on them and audiobooks on the MP3 players so I can lend them to my neighbors, many of whom never used to do much reading and now love it. The ones who can't see well any longer now listen to audiobooks, as do some of those who can see. The majority of them read.

For what it's worth I don't own a TV and I haven't had one for the past decade. It was taking up needed space in my closet so I gave it to someone. I do watch TV shows now and then on Netflix and other internet sources but I spend more time reading by far. I'm just too old anymore to have the motivation to watch TV.

I don't know which old person you observed to get your ideas but I don't think one makes for a representative sample. Look around.

Good point! My parents both died a few years ago not long after their 95th birthdays. Both were still avid readers as they were all their lives.

I bought 9 Sandisk MP3 players with l-ion batteries and I just looked at my orders on Amazon and found the last one I purchased was in 2008. The newest one, then, is 7 years old. Just guessing I'd say the oldest one is 4 years older than that. I gave 3 away years ago so I still have 6 of them and all their batteries are just fine. None has gone bad. I can't promise they'll hold a charge as long as they used to but they aren't noticeably degraded.

I think what happens is that they're probably going to last 5 years and after that it depends on how you treat them and how much you use them. These are all still used to loan audiobooks to my neighbors but they don't get used that often anymore. Probably each gets used a few hours a month.

How they're treated has a lot to do with how long they last, I think. About 3 years ago I decided to replace my AA and AAA rechargeable NiMh batteries that I use for a number of even older devices. Just guessing, the old batteries were probably 6 or 7 years old and all still held a charge just fine. I gave them to a neighbor along with an old charger I had. Within 3 months all the batteries had gone bad. Since the packages of batteries I bought had more than I needed I gave her a few of my new batteries. Three months later they were all used up. The rest of those batteries are still being used by me for the past 3 years and they all still hold a charge just fine.

I think the thing about batteries is that anything you say about how long they last might or might not be true. I suspect there's no real way around that.

I think age and experience has done just the opposite to me. I find reading more enjoyable now than I ever did, much as I loved it when I was younger. I don't read the same kind of stuff now, although sometimes I do. And when I do I find new things in it and it provokes new ideas; things I wasn't really ready for till now.

I wonder if someone who finds it hard to find new ideas in books is focusing his reading too narrowly.

You're absolutely right. That's one of the most important things I took into consideration, which is partly why I haven't bought a second one yet.

I had a Sony Reader PRS-505 before I got my first kindle, and even though the batteries aren't (technically) user replaceable, there are websites out there that sell batteries for these types of devices. And you can find great video tutorials showing how to open and/or disassemble these un-openable devices, including iPods, etc.

So replacing the Sony Reader wouldn't have been a problem. Nor would the classic iPod be.

However, devices made within the last 5 years or so, are getting harder and harder to open without ruining them. And looking at my Voyage, I don't think I'd want to take a chance.

So thanks to you guys, for making me think further about these issues. I've decided not to get a backup after all. I'll just wait until I actually need a replacement.

Omg, that's horrible. Are you sure? I have handheld game systems (Nintendo DS, GBA, Sony PSP) that use graphics and sound. And they have lasted 8 to 10 years, and are still going. They don't last as long as they used to, but I can still play for a few hours before needing to be recharged.

Yes, actually, I have read more this year. Funny thing is, the first few years I seemed to have more fun searching for and collecting books, than reading them. (I used to do the same thing with video games)

But one day I realized what I was doing and made a conscious decision to stop accumulating and READ what I'd purchased. So that's what I'm doing this year.

Omg, Tony, I can't even have this talk with you. Do you live under a rock? You have some major perception issues. Not being able to FIND new stories, does NOT equal the inability to ENJOY things.

Maybe the problem is that authors and screenwriters are spending all their time COPYING other writers' stories instead of creating something original.

<sigh> You listening skills is as poor as your observational skills. I said I don't want a different version.

The good news for you, Tony, is that you'll get smarter and wiser as you age.

Speaking of battery replacement...

Apple has a battery replacement policy for their devices. Does Amazon have a similar policy for replacing Kindles with dead batteries?

I know Apple doesn't actually replace the battery; they just give you a whole new refurbished device with a fresh battery in it. But at least it's like brand new condition and you're getting it for only $80 (outside warrantee) rather than paying hundreds for a whole new device.

Does Amazon have a battery replacement policy, too?
