A few non-couponable bargains that you may or may not want to pick up during Kobo's Super Points Bonus Days promotion which ends today (valid for North America unless otherwise indicated, also price-matched in other stores).
@ $1.99 each from Simon & Schuster's Scribner imprint, the first 2 novels in Norwegian crime author Anne Holt (SYKM, Wikipedia)'s award-nominated Hanne Wilhelmsen series starring a lesbian police officer in Oslo (other installments in the series are $16.99 CAD or £4.50 UK when available, from different publishers (couponable from the UK one), so this is probably a US/Canada-only deal).
@ $4.99 CAD each from Penguin Canada only, 25 novels by bestselling pioneering espionage author John le Carré (SYKM, Wikipedia), including both Smiley series novels and standalones. Apparently there's some sort of major promotional event for his stuff. Shop carefully, a few are omnibus editions for novels also on sale at the same price. (Most corresponding titles seem to be $8-12 in the US.) @ $4.99 CAD each from Hachette's Black Moon Thriller imprint for francophone aficionados of Nordic crime titles in French translation, 6 assorted titles including ones by Swedish author Liza Marklund (SYKM, Wikipedia) in her popular and film-adapted Annika Bengtzon series starring a tabloid reporter in Stockholm, and a standalone by Swedish author Carina Bergfeldt (regularly around $12 CAD each). NB: Le loup rouge, Studio 6, and Comment je vais tuer papa are apparently being offered in slightly altered editions which don't show up as previously bought on the actual product page, so check your libraries if you think you might have gotten them during a previous promotion. @ $6.99 CAD from Albin Michel: La Reine de la Baltique by Swedish author Viveca Sten (Wikipedia), who is not yet available in English translation. This appears to be the 1st in a series starring an Inspector in Stockholm (French translation of I de lugnaste vatten), and her other translated books are regularly priced at $13.99 CAD. It's apparently French-translation thriller promo month at Kobo, and if you're interested in bargain deals on works by R. J. Ellory, Dennis Lehane, Preston & Child, Stephen King, and others, you should probably check out their Promotions du mois : jusqu'à 70% de rabais, which is mostly offering them in the $4.99-$6.99 CAD range (this is cheap for francophone books; normally they're priced at about twice as much). |

Atonement of Blood is the 24th in Peter Tremayne's excellent (IMO) Sister Fidelma series. It just dropped from $9.99 to $5.99 in the Kindle US store, no idea why or for how long. $5.99 is not a great sale price, but his books range $7.99 and up, and are not couponable/discountable, so I thought I'd toss this one into the thread.
This series persuaded me to visit Cashel when we visited Ireland, and although most of the buildings remaining on the Rock of Cashel now date from the 12th and 13th century, and not Fidelma's 7th century, it was still a lot of fun to imagine Fidelma, Eadulf, Colgu and everyone there. link: http://www.amazon.com/Atonement-Bloo...dp/B00HTJ1D6K/ Spoiler:

It's nice to see that AmazonCrossing are bringing out English versions of more authors I've wanted to try, even as store exclusives (mind you, they do have a nice habit of putting them on $1.99 sale at semi-regular intervals), and it'll be interesting see how it compares to the French. ETA: Ooh, lucky and lucrative 8888th post. Well, I've learned useful things today, as well as saved on some stuff I really wanted, so ![]() |

Free on Amazon UK - Let There Be Blood (A Lord Ambrose Mystery) by Jane Jakeman
'Summer, 1830. Lord Ambrose Malfine’s solitary existence is shattered by a murder on the outskirts of his estate. Forced out of his post-war rehabilitation by the possibility of gross injustice, he arrives just in time to petition a fair trial for the gypsy accused. The two victims, Old Crawshay and his son, were found by the mistress of the house with fatal gunshots... As Lord Ambrose looks into the events leading up to the murders, there are many questions to be answered. A lady of the house with a dangerous addiction to laudanum, a governess whose garments betray a wealthy background and a mysterious figure trespassing on a crippled leg all populate this compelling and dizzying crime. Lord Ambrose fears there will be more murders to follow but will he be able to identify and stop the killer before more people are hurt?' Free on Amazon UK -Death by the Mistletoe by Angus MacVicar
'It is the middle of June, and a severe electrical storm is predicted to hit the British Isles. In the event, weather conditions are even worse than expected and when the storm ends, it leaves behind more destruction than forecast. Amongst the thirty people killed are nine members of the clergy, struck down by lightning. The storm has been ferocious but is the blizzard alone to blame for these deaths? James McPherson, flame-haired and quick-witted editor of the Campbeltown Gazette, is among the first to realise that something is amiss. Noting that the bodies of many of the clergymen who died had been found close to sprigs of mistletoe, he deduces that they have been murdered. Publishing his suspicions in his newspaper, McPherson triggers a national hunt for the killers, a hunt in which he plays a major part. James McPherson's pursuit of the killers takes him into mortal danger and leads him to physical injury, as he uncovers the machinations of a sinister cult - based almost on his own doorstep - a cult that threatens both his life, and that of the woman he loves, Eileen.'
