So if we changed the language to RU in the OPF, would KF8 give hyphens for English text?

Obviously, that doesn't work, because you can't hyphenate English text using Russian hyphenation rules.

... and if it's being done using a hyphenation dictionary (which is the only "correct" way to hyphenate text), no English words would match any of the dictionary entries.

The Kindle for Android app has been updated to version 4.18.0. The release notes mention the addition of the Bookerly font.

I did some testing and although not mentioned in the release notes it also adds support for enhanced typesetting and now downloads books in KFX format. (I suppose that is included under "minor improvements".)

It sounds like the next release (or if not the next one of the next few) of Kindle for PC is going to upset a lot of people.

Interesting that they're bringing Word Runner to Android first rather than iOS, not to mention the installed base of Fire HD6, which still hasn't gotten Fire OS5 update. I would rather they add TTS support (that would allow using Spritz, which would not have the 'only some books' restriction of Word Runner), but am looking forward to trying it out. Finally, typography free reading!

Update: in adding Word Runner, it seems Landscape orientation is no longer available on my phone. Conversely, on my tablet, Landscape is still there, but Word Runner switches it to Portrait (I rarely take it out of its landscape oriented dock, so that makes Word Runner unusable). Bookerly, yes, but apparently not yet 'enhanced typography'.

It looks like the K4A 4.18.0 KFX renderer has some new features, including support for tables. I expect that there will be updates to add this to the other Kindle platforms and that more books will showing up with enhanced typesetting enabled.

The hyphenation engine could use some work. (See the attached image.)

Word Runner is not a good idea. Why is it Amazon is adding annoying features such as Word Runner and Word Wise? Don't they know people just want to read and not have all this annoyance in the way?

Now the issue here is since we know Amazon can do hyphenation using KF8 with Russian using a Russian hyphenation dictionary, why not do so with other languages and drop KFX? Also, there's no reason not to have kerning with KF8.

To me it seems Amazon is going backwards instead of forwards what with KFX, Word Runner, and Word Wise.

Given that the standalone Android app has just had KFX support added, it's reasonable to suppose that it will shortly be added to the Fire. AKAIK, it's not there at the moment.
