DebT, I'm sorry you had that experience with Amazon. I've had nothing but good experience with their reps and returns, and from all accounts, so have many other people.

I'm not understanding how they would let you buy one item with your card, but not another. Must have been a really bad day for that rep!

As for availability, I really think Amazon underestimated O's power to make a lot of people want something they wouldn't ordinarily buy,and when you add those that were just waiting for a price cut, you have a problem.

Regardless, if you are happy, and it sounds like your are, with your choice, that is the only thing that matters.

Enjoy!

I think even if they did adequately estimate it, production is going to be limited primarily by the number of e-ink screens/controllers they can get. They can't necessarily increase production to the levels that they would like as quickly as they would like. Even absent an issue sourcing parts, they still may not have the manufacturing capacity with their contractor right away. Recognizing the need for increased stock doesn't mean you can always make it happen. IMO, Oprah's endorsement likely gains them more sales than another out-of-stock holiday season will lose them. It's sad for those that are having to wait. At least they seem to have kept more in reserve for RMAs this time. Last time, people were having to wait as long as new customers for replacement units.

The Sony Readers are defenatly better to hold, and the 700 especially is the best page turner around no accidental page turns as with the kindle, but still can turn the page anywhere.

i would love for my sony reader to be able to use the amazon bookstore, and i think in a few years me might actually see that. but for now amazon is making their money (in a few years i expect the price of these devices to not be worth it to only allow your own format on your device they will drop in price)

Amazon has a Great Book Store, I loved amazons book store and i loved browsing it on the kindle.

in the end i have my PRS 700. as i have thousands of books on my computer already. and have no plan on buying books anytime soon. in a few years the kindle might appeal more to me when i catch up with the books i want to read from the last 100 years.

Have you used a Kindle? I have never "accidentally" turned a page while I was reading.

I have accidentally turned a page or two when I first got the Kindle, but not anytime recently. I have grown to like the oversized page turn keys because it gives me a wide variety of ways to hold the Kindle while still being able to turn the page single handed.

Pretty much everyone who tries mine out inadvertently turns a page or so. No big deal to me.

I think the ergonomics of it are relative. I find the Kindle perfectly comfortable. It meshes easily with how I want to hold it. I do find it's easy to accidentally hit buttons handing it to people but I never do just sitting and reading. My husband did not find it so comfortable at first. He holds his books differently than I do and his hand wants to rest where the buttons are. He's adjusted but it didn't feel natural at first like it did to me. He doesn't accidentally turn pages but I think he would opt to turn off some of the buttons if he could so he could hold it where his instinct dictates.

The Kindle is irrelevent for most of us, given that it's only available in the US .

Here's my advice, bigmat1201:

1) Listen to every one on this thread and on this site. Look at those critics who can see value in the different devices - those who are fair-minded, able to analyze both the strengths and weaknesses of the devices they're familiar with.

2) Listen, as well, to the tone of that advice. How does a writer (I include myself) come across to you? Arrogant? Sincere? Understanding? God's right-hand advisor?

3) Look at the ergonomics of the different devices.
4) Look at the content-value of the devices. (Do you read mainly Fiction or Non-Fiction?
5) Look at the different formats available from each device.
6) Look at personal horror stories. (Device Failure.)
7) Look at successful stories of ownership.
8) Look at front-engine managment. (Sony's store, for example: some people like it, whereas most people seem not to like it. For me, it's ok.)
9) Look at the "Library" of available ebooks for the device(s) you're considering.
10) Look to see if anyone has a personal agenda in "bashing" a device.

And always - ALWAYS - smile when you're reading.

Have Fun!

Don

Thanks for the info.

I'm still leaning toward the Kindle, but I hate having to wait for one, so I'm torn.

Keep checking under "new and used" tab. They sell refurbished ones, like new with same warranty for $329 with immediate shipping. They sell out fast, tho, so you have to check constantly.

yes, i had a Kindle for a Month. It didnt happen Alot. but it happened, Enough. I adjust alot. or i get up and move. or do something that flips the page... and to comfortably turn the page back, 1 handed, required me to use my Nose lol. the page turned when the kindle got wacked against something on the right while i was holding with my left hand right above the keyboard (that was the most comfortable position.)

my main gripe with the kindle is its Size, its just so large, i couldnt put it in my pocket. and i dont carry a bag with me anywhere i go. but i did carry my PRS 500 everwhere i went.

the 700 can go everywhere the 500 went, In my Pocket, and even give me comfortable lighting while im waiting for the bus at 2:00AM after i have taken my girlfriend home.

for the month i had the kindle i loved it, i showed it off to everyone who asked. but it was always in my hand. even when i would have rather had the hand empty.

also the point i was trying to make was you can hold the 700 anyway you want.
while the kindle you have to hold it in some way that is not Prone to turn the pages (like if you wanted to hold it anywhere on the right side for example. as the button is literally on the side. you have to hook your thumb up and over the button.) the kindle can be held lot of ways, but some are Prone to accidental page flips, while the 700 can literally be held anyway and never have a page flip accidently.

If i actually paid for books i would have kept the Kindle.. its just so simple and easy..
But ive got a huge Library already. so the wireless feature was Moot for me. and that is the only thing the Kindle holds over the Sony.
