Yes. The App gives you the option to store files on the tablet or phone's microSD card IIRC -- which is definitely the way to go if you want to try to reassemble the issues and move them to another device. Bear in mind that the pages are renamed with apparently random names. You'll have to sort them all out one at a time.

I actually decided that this would require a lot more effort than I thought would be worthwhile.

Depends I suppose. General users might be if it were to go under and B&N doesn't do something similar to Borders and Sony did when they shut down and transfer the books to Kobo (or somewhere else) so folks still have access of some sort.

I've got about 960 books in my Nook account (most from the FW transfer) and am not too worried as all are properly backed up in more than one place.

Backed up and liberated from the shackles of DRM, I suppose.

Yeah, all of my purchases are backed up and will remain accessible if Barnes & Noble exits the ebook business.

And I would expect my Nooks to continue working.

Yeah, I'd probably never bother with it either. But it's nice to know that I could.

There's no good reason for them to be. If NOOK stopped serving its books right now, the only thing I would lose is potential updates to old books, which would put me in exactly the same place as I am with Kobo right now. If I knew for a fact that NOOK was going under tomorrow, I would buy books from them today.

I had a lot of books at Books on Board, too. I still have all of them.

That's specifically why I don't buy books from any service with unhacked DRM. If iTunes went out of business and I had books there, I'd be totally fracked.

There are some "Nook Magazines" that are only image files instead of properly rendered books. Magazines such as Writers Digest, Simple, Readers Digest, etc are all in their "special" format, which only works on tablets. The file says epub but it isn't, nothing else can read it. While the format is nice to look at, with fancy page turns like you have a physical magazine in your hands, the resolution wasn't quite high enough for me. I went direct with the companies that offered PDF's. I could zoom in more, and they were DRM free as well.

You can convert a "special" Nook Magazine. If you have a rooted tablet, you can access the epub or the directory it expands to. What they do is you download the epub, which contains all the images in the epub/zip (but not epub format) then it unzips all the files into a folder that the reader then displays. Not sure why they did it this way instead of just having the reader display the epub. But anyway you could grab the images, and stitch them together into a book if you needed.

Thankfully the Analog and Azamov are not that way, and are full epubs. One other tip though, if you download them from a B&N e-ink device the images (cover etc) will be gray scale. If you download with a tablet or Nook for PC the images are in color. There doesn't seem to be any other difference. And the color versions look the same on a e-ink display in my testing. Also B&N does not offer back issues, never understood why they don't. But regardless they are all DRM free.

With regard to Nook devices if B&N close, they will continue to function. You will have to side load everything but other than that they will work. The only possible "Gotcha" would be if you have to erase or factory restore. The Nook's want you to register first before anything else. BUT there are ways around that. I forget all the details, however there is a way to bypass the registration process. A 'secret tap method' that is different for each Nook model. Some of them have a link where you can tap to register later. Nook simple touch you swipe long the top left to right and a button for Factory. Tap that then under the factory menu there is 'Skip Oobe’ button. Nook color it don't start setting it up (if you do shut it off and back on) and tap power while holding Volume Up and home again. I think this is the same for Nook Tablet. Nook Classic I am not sure about, I think it either had a skip option on the screen or you had to hold one of the arrow buttons while powering it up at the start up screen.

Thanks for the additional info about the Analog and Asimov's, DB.

It definitely seems that BN would be best for me for current issues or a subscription as I'd prefer epub. Too bad Kobo doesn't seem to provide epubs since my primary ereader is a Kobo and they do carry back issues.

My problem is that I cannot seem to find the .epubs anywhere (although sometimes searching the file system on a phone is not the most satisfying process). It appears that the files are not where they were when I last downloaded one of the Analog issues. I will try again.

Update: Okay, I have found the files that B&N's Nook app loads again. Installing SSHDroid to allow me to search the file system helped a lot. I still think it should be much easier.

Thanks,

The current version of the Nook Android app puts the books in a hidden folder. In older versions, they were in a folder you could see if you connected your Android to a computer via USB.

Indeed. Finding them is the tricky bit. Being able to connect through SSHDroid encouraged me to type more and hence explore better (i.e. find / -name '*.epub' did the trick... :-).

Download Comics/Updated TamperMonkey Script?

Hey all, glad I found this thread. I'm sorry if this is a duplicate question, but I was trying to download some graphic novels that I bought from Barnes and Noble. The Nook for PC app won't download comics or magazines, and the script that worked late 2014 no longer works as B&N has removed My Nook Library. I was tinkering around with the script, but can't get it quite right and was wondering if anyone else had updated it? Alternatively, can anyone point me in the right direction to be able to download my comics?

Switching to Amazon and their Kindle after this. Such a hassle.

I haven't heard that anyone has updated the Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey script. I don't imagine the structure of the download urls have changed, just the page layout. If you knew the url, you could plug the book's isbn in. Unfortunately, I never made note of that url. And I haven't tried to suss it out of that script.

You can download the nook comics with the Nook Windows store app, Nook for Android, Nook for iOS, and Nook tablets. If you need to "future proof" them, you're going to have a challenge though. I think it's possible, just not easy.

FYI, you can't download Amazon comics with Kindle for PC. If you have an E-ink Kindle, you can download them for transfer via USB from the website.

For comics, I prefer Google. You can easily download them from the website, and they are often available in both pdf and epub. (Both of which are "future proof-able.")

As I said, I'm tinkering with the script. At this point it's become more of an experiment than anything else, especially since they've pretty much gotten rid of My Nook Library.

I have Nook for PC (I believe that's what you are referring to by Nook Windows, but I'll check again after I post this) and it will not let me download my comics. I get the error "This title is currently not available for download for this application. (Download: 2138)". Not only will it not allow me to download it, I can't even read it on my computer.

Thank you for the heads-up about comics on Kindle and Google. I'll be looking through Google's selection, for sure! Thank you!

Edit: Just checked. NOOK--the Windows app--only works for Windows 10. Unfortunately, I am waiting to upgrade to Windows 10 once I get a new laptop. I have a lot of work on this machine that I would hate to lose if anything goes wrong. So I guess my options are limited to the script for now, and Google for future purchases. Thanks again.
