Viziplex is a form of eInk display. It's the version that came before Pearl.

Well technically all eInk displays are Viziplex (Pearl, Carta, Mobius, Triton) as it's just a catch all name now for eInk tech (originally it meant 2nd gen eInk), but the individual version names are what are used for marketing. So all screens are "Viziplex", but not all are Pearl, Carta, etc.

Can Kobo actually get away with claiming a Pearl screen when in fact it doesn't, along with no mention of the units being demo/old stock? It sounds unlawful to me, but I'm no law student.

I see, I thought it was a different company but it is just an older name from eInk.

I am in US and I also received the ruby red cover and demo mini today.

How do we know if the screen is really Pearl? I suspect it is not when it was clearly advertised as having Pearl and grey sleep cover. I do not believe Pearl screens were out when the mini was produced.

So Kobo claiming a Pearl screen is indeed incorrect.

Yes, and that was the only reason I bought one. I am not happy with this false advertising.

Whose idea was it to say that it wouldn't work with snap backs, cross that line off the back of the box (in multiple languages!), and then INCLUDE a snap back? What the hell?

Didn't the Mini always have a Pearl screen? Where did the idea that they were pre-Pearl vizplex come from?

My mother got a Mini two years ago, and the screen looks the same as the Pearl screen on my Glo. I would have thought the difference would be obvious to the eye if it wasn't Pearl.

I don't think there ever were 5" Pearl screen assemblies. It being from 2012, you'd think they were Pearl, but all specs I've been able to find that actually mention the screen type say Vizplex, like this one.

E Ink's site list 5" Pearl modules, and also describe Pearl as having "a contrast range that's 50% greater than our previous generation film", which is the same as the difference between Pearl and Carta.

Edit: And here is E Ink's page showcasing the Kobo Mini which it says: "Uses E Ink Pearl Active Matrix Display."

Kobo's web site has removed the banner ad for the Mini sale. However, it still lists the Mini on its page with the other ereaders, though labeled 'sold out.'

We still don't if there are (or will be) newly produced Minis with upgraded screens and 'non-removable' backs.

Has anyone caught one of these 'unicorns' in the wild? Or are we down to refurbed demo units (endangered species)?

The 5" Sony PRS-350 said Vizplex on the screen, but the specs said it was a Pearl screen. I have both the 350 and the Mini and the contrast seems (far) better to me on the 350.

Sites like Family Christian who still list the old Mini show it as "Vizplex V110 display" in the specs.

and a review from 2012 when it came out...
Quote:
Kobo's gone back in time a generation to outfit the Mini, eschewing Pearl technology for the Vizplex V110 model. The older model's contrast is a step down, but most readers likely won't see a huge difference here, particularly with Kobo's advanced font settings, which allow you to add weight and sharpness to the text
