Running Calibre in a Domain Network?

			Hello,

I have quite a simple question about Calibre (hopefully!) as a prospective user of the software. We operate a domain environment with a file server. Is it possible to have Calibre installed on multiple client PCs that can all access a single shared folder of e-books on this server? Thanks for any information you may have, I did have a look through the manual and other threads in this forum but was unable to find a definite answer to this. Best, Simon |

Calibre is NOT client-Server (at this time) Visit the FAQ entry about NAS and Network shares YES (sorta) to SERVE up as a Web Page from a replica of the Library kept on the Librarians PC (the only place adds/updates/deletes are really done) |

If you absolutely must access the library through calibre (and do maintenance) on multiple computers, you should use some sort of File Sync software, e.g. MS SyncToy.

Mirror the library onto the NAS, and make sure everyone updates their copy from the mirror before running calibre, and updates the mirror from their copy after they close calibre. Do not have multiple people accessing calibre at the same time! database clashes. The same principle applies to Dropbox/OneDrive/Box/Copy.com as well. ... Much simple and less hassle to use the Content Server for remote access/download. |

Thanks both for your replies, very useful. We are going to recommend that they operate the software on a single machine for now. If it becomes necessary to use on multiple PCs we will look at some kind of network sync solution. Thanks again!

One other suggestion. Either the Calibre Content Server or Calibre for OPDS would seem to suit your needs. Multiple access is not then an issue. The content server is the easiest solution as it is built-in.

Thanks for the additional information Darryl. It's good to know that there are other options available if we choose to deploy the software beyond a single PC.

If multiple users updating the Library is needed

consider having them use Remote desktop connection (or VNC) to the Library 'server' to insure that Only One user updates at a time BTW this solution works from all OS (OK, I have not tries an actual ADD book update from my Android device, But RDC and VNC connections both work from it) |
