I will second that. I started using Calibre and the first apprentice tools about 5-6 years ago.

I was able to save all my books from Mobipocket and my books from Amazon.
I was unfortunately not able to install Microsoft litt reader on my PC, and I lost about 25 books. Not the end of the world but still .

Not so long ago I found some books that were protected by several long lost credit card codes. Also lost.

Lesson: Praise for Calibre and apprentice Alf.

I also had a lot of LIT files. There was a program called ConvertLit that I downloaded several years ago. It cleaned the files and then Calibre converted them just fine. Don't know if it is still available. I don't have it anymore. That was several computers ago. You might try to Google it.

I kind of miss Microsoft Reader. It seems reading was easier then. You could buy ebooks anywhere in LIT format and they just worked. You weren't tied to any one store.

You needed to have an "Activated" copy of Microsoft Reader on your PC in order for it to work. The activation servers have been switched off for many years now, so it's no longer possible to use Convert Lit.

Thanks Harry. I didn't realize that. Like I said, that was many years ago.

It was, as you say, a long time ago. It's a program that I made extensive use of myself at one time. I still have a great many eBooks that I originally bought in LIT format from Fictionwise, and which have since been converted to Mobi and ePub formats. Most of my "Agatha Christie" collection was bought that way, for example.

It was what happened to me. I was able to install a lit reader on my PC, but I couldn't activate the program.

I was very lucky in that when I finally woke up to the problem I still had an ancient PC with an activated Microsoft Reader app.

I didn't have to do the actual stripping on that PC; there was a program that just extracted some key files that I could then copy onto a more current PC and run the ConvertLit program on that.

This illustrates what a good idea it is to strip DRM as soon as you buy the book; there's never a guarantee that you'll be able to do it later.

If you have ADE, Calibre and the plugin installed correctly, you'd just need to import the DRM-ed books into Calibre and then wait.

If you want an un-DRM-ed version outside of Calibre, then just run "Save to Disk".
no my pc froze (hence needing a new one) took too long and got bored

If the books are in Calibre, just send the books to the device from Calibre.

Right click on the book, and select "Send to Device" from the pop-up menu.
