KOReader lets you turn "Follow Links" on or off, but the links need to be there in a normal manner. For some books the TOC is not constructed with links, for those that do, KOReader lets you follow them. The same for footnote links ect.. For links to web sites, that is a different case. Not sure how PDF links might work.

I tried also the Koreader but I dont understand it - the pdf are handled quickly but book scans are unreadable as the fonts are too small.

Are these your own scans? You can crop & zoom to any size text/image you want. The built-in OCR can do only so much, and some PDFs make it harder than others. If you are scanning your own, you can use a good OCR program to turn the PDF into a text based document. Then you can have any text you want.

No, they are not my scans, many of them are not OCRed.
I've found the crop @ landscape options - there are useful. However I find it hard to interact with the reader. Can I turn off dictionary and notes? They keep popping up when I try to get the general options bar.

I guess you did not try to switch on "reflow". Or did you?

Just tap the screen, the dictionary and highlighting take "Long Presses" to activate.

Trying to fit a full sized page, that is essentially an image, into a 6" 800x600 display, is going to make the text pictured very small. You would have to zoom in and pan around the image to have larger image parts, including "text".

Ok, got used to the tapping. Used reflow which usually works.Nice!
Thanks a lot for the help. Earlier I wanted to give away the reader, now its getting useful :-)

But how do I zoom @ pan when I don't want to reflow (when there are tables and pictures?)
And can I set the default contrast to be maximal?

It isn't either terrible or unsuited for 6" screens. It's not the format, but the specific files.

A PDF file designed for 6" screens can be indistinguishable from ePub or much much better (as it's immune to the various ePub renderer limitations and glitches). With the caveat that you won't be able to change font size, margins, etc. (but if the PDF is designed with the settings you like, you may never notice).

Of course, for A4/letter-sized PDFs, scans, etc. a 6" screen device is never going to be a satisfying experience, much less if it's eink.

True, but in the real world the overwhelming majority of PDFs have not been formatted for a 6" page size, and will display poorly on such a device.

To be specific - when reading an A4 non-eng non-OCRed pdf in koreader I get only view mode / prog bar/ embedded style options, and choosing font size of course has no effect. There's no reflow and even no cropping possibility. Can I zoom in so that I could read any page in two halves in koreader or maybe the only possibilty is to k2pdfopt it?

Which non-english language are you trying to read? As long as there are no characters that overlap with characters of other lines, and there a spaces between words or at least between word groups, reflow should work (although not satisfactorily in some cases). AFAIK, Koreader is using the same code as does k2pdfopt.

You should be able to turn reflow on and the built-in OCR should try to render good results, for many PDFs that will work fine, but it can only do so much and some PDFs are poor OCR candidates.

As you have noticed the built-in OCR is, currently only setup for English and Chinese.

You should be able to crop any PDF.

Here's a book with separate letters that I can't crop or reflow in koreader:
[link to apparently non-public domain book deleted]
Anyway I wouldn't want to crop it, just to break each page to two parts, just as k2pdfopt does.

I think the borders of the scan, including the spiral binding, are confusing the crop function, have you tried manual cropping?

It is not English or Chinese, so the OCR, needed to reflow non text pages, cannot function. This built-in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) can only recognize English and Simplified Chinese characters.

If you can find an OCR program that can recognize, whatever that is, and turn it into text, KOReader might be able to handle it.

Luck;
Ken

I give up OCRing it but can I crop it inside the Kobo aura? or simply break each page into 2 parts and render them one after the other? This could be a good enough solution for most of the A4 PDFs. Cropping each book on my PC would be quite inconvenient...
