If you ever have to give it up, let me know and I'll send you mine. It was bought and used for drying wet spots when we had to clean up after a cat, it's now used for helping cure epoxy. I don't think it's ever been used anywhere near hair...

Am, thank you, that's very kind of you. Hang on to it for me for when I find myself anywhere near Surrey.

Admittedly I need to get heavier needles, I've broken a couple sewing zips onto bags. I'd like both but they take up so much space... although second hand ones are very cheap, we paid ~$OZ300 for ours, and could have got an overlocker for the same price. With a cutting foot (so nice to have).

(it's actually smaller than the table, but not a lot)

Hmm, gadget list... I'm a gadget collector. Well, except my liseuse which I lost.
  1. desktop computer
  2. main camera
  3. cellphone (just a standard cellphone, nothing fancy)
  4. laptop computer
  5. battery drill (new!)
  6. waterproof toy camera
  7. TIG welder

(there are more )

Best sewing gadget: the wee spring-loaded thread cutting scissors. After I took a Dremel to them and tidied up the pointy end so it actually slides under sewn thread rather than catching on it. Better than a standard unpicker, and it cuts loose threads too

i have one of those little springy snippy things too, they are great. i wish i could have an overlocker, but there's really no more room under the bed (that's where the sewing machine lives, and my suitcase when i'm not using it, and the spare blankets and towels, and quite a bit of other stuff...). luckily though, i have a tailor shop on the ground floor of my building, and i'm quite friendly with the two tailors. and *they* have an overlocker.

I just have a basic Bernina 1260...made in '94, I believe.
To me, the best one they ever made. Solid, plenty of stitches, and a workhorse of a machine. I have a serious problem walking into a shop and have the ladies there insist that the new ones are better. They may do more, but better? They are selling for over $7000. For that kind of money..........

I like Bernina, but I can't afford them!

My local sewing shop, thankfully, don't recommend the most expensive they think they can get away with. I bought my sewing machine and the overlocker there, and in both cases the one they recommended was cheaper, but - according them - more robust and reliable. And, in the case of the overlocker, easier to thread!

oh, right, gadgets !
hmmm...

my computer and modem : it's almost sad how much of my life revolves around them (work, play, communication, music, entertainment...)

my cellphone, although ironically not so much for the telephone function as for the really good camera it also is, and the alarm clock, and occasionally the agenda (because that also has an alarm). when i have to get up really early i program alarms at 2 or 3 different times and also add an event to the agenda, with an alarm on that too. i'm always worried i'll oversleep.

my wireless headphones which preserve my sanity when it's noisy here.

my mp3 player, although i rarely use it at home.

my electric kettle (or is that too low-tech ?) : the number of times i've felt like having some tea and then forgotten the water on the stove, and then about an hour an half later thought "hm, what's that funny smell ?", thank god for heating things that shut themselves off.

probably plenty more. i love gadgets, although i don't really have *that* many of them.

DG, you are off on your prices. The new ones seem to be in the $11,000 range and Baby Lock is not far behind. OK, so Baby Lock doesn't have the even feed foot so critical for free motion work; but, what the heck. (You see, I have paid attention to things my wife tells me.)

One of her machines is also a Bernina from the 90s as her's is the last mechanical stitch construction machine they made before they went to all computer control. As I remember in the 90s they went through about 3 or 4 changes and each required you to buy new feet (sorry Daffy, not that kind of feet.)

My wife does enjoy her embroidery machines, sewing machines, embellisher, blind hemmer, serger, and some that I am not sure I want to know about.

For me, the cell phone and computer.

My other device...err, devices...would be my cameras. I've got a few cameras, but to make topicality I guess you'd have to put them all under the one "item" (no point in giving up one if I've a few others to replace it).

Cameras. I would struggle to give up my cameras. If I had to choose one it would be the Leaf AFI7S that I mount on a Cambo view camera if you want to get both esoteric and technical. I will admit that my cameras come before my reader.
