It should tell Kobo something about the market for a mini-sized reader.

Hopefully it's only the promo batch (with free cover) that's sold out, and (hopefully) a new Mini (with non-removable back) will be available for sale.

calibre and the Mini
According to Kobo, the ids used for this Mini are the same as the old one. That means that calibre will recognise it with no changes.

This also suggests that the internal hardware is unchanged. But, it is possible that it will have a 4GB card instead of a 2GB. If so, like the Glo's with a 4GB card, it will probably need to be expanded to use it all.

That's a good price and I'm glad to see some people got one before they sold out.

I love my Kobo Mini.
I was lucky to buy a new one earlier this year as a spare.

The original Mini is probably the toughest ereader out there, and I think the smaller screen is probably part of the reason. I have carried mine in a shirt pocket nearly every day for two years and it remains unbroken. I was sorry I missed the sale; I do hope there may be more on offer afterwards...

If I was going to own only one ereader, the Mini would be it.

While they seem to have replaced the snapback, I expect that the back will be removable in the same way that it is for the other devices. But, someone did post instructions for expanding the partition on Glo's that have 4GB cards in them without opening them.

Yep, same here. I need another eReader like I need a hole in the head, but the Kobo Mini is unique and, at $50 new, that would have been a good deal. I guess I should read my email more closely.

EDIT: Is there anything about this Mini that would indicate that it was not old stock? I just assumed they found some extra Minis and were clearing them out. It appears to still have the old white logo and diamond pattern on the back, etc.

The screen. The original had a Vizplex screen (which was old at the time), while this new one has a Pearl screen. Maybe they bought leftover pearl film from E-Ink.
