This discussion makes me wonder how bad traditional American bookshops are. Here in Germany even a small bookshop will have more than 5000 titles in stock, and if you have to special order, you can pick up your book the next morning. Most shops will also deliver the book to your house without charge (a recent development, because of Amazon...)

Amazon Books is unusual because it _only_ has 5,000 titles in stock. In the US this is rare to the point of nonexistence.

We can usually get next day delivery if one is close enough to a shipper's outlet.
Some places are a 2 day minimum.
Same day is very rare.
Using Amazon as an example, I am about 5 hours from their nearest warehouse. Make that 6 since I forgot Fort Worth traffic. So same day delivery is pretty much out of the question.

Most traditional book stores don't have "special delivery." They have a "We'll Call You (Maybe) When Your Book (That We Would Have in Stock Already If It Was Actually Worth Owning) Comes In" service.

I remember back in the ancient times when I used to buy books from physical bookshops, if it was something that had to order specially it could take weeks, if not months.

But your replies sound pretty bleak. Seems a regular German bookshop is a lot better than an American one.
