You never feel inclined to splurge for a favorite author, or for a highly recommended tome that hits you in just the right spot?
Do you pay top dollar for everything you buy?
Second: how many books do you personally read in one year?

See the thing with big readers is say I want the latest Clive Cussler/Russell Blake book, yes I will start saving my pennies now so in roughly 10 months I can splurge on it.
Now if I just want some other big name, I know eventually they will be in the library or thrift store cheaper.
Heck I picked up the entire FSOG for $8 on ebooks because I waited for a sale.

One book will work just as well as another in most cases.

Yeah, I can't really afford to splurge, even with my most favorite authors. And I have lots and lots of favorite authors, 100's of them.
If they come decent priced out the gate that is different, but if its a high price, for me that is, then it goes on a wishlist at the library. If its not a publisher that offers library books, it goes on a wait for loan amazon wishlist until it does. Or I save up enough $1 from slow shipping from Amazon.

I think when one reads a lot, there are lots of great books lined up to read next so not really a lack of things to pick from. And since I do vetting, I expect to enjoy pretty much all of them. Of course they are all different books, but I can still enjoy them all on a similar level anyway.

But since I want to read ALL THE BOOKS anyway, it doesn't matter which ones I read first. They aren't going anywhere.

In all honesty that book I specifically mentioned, I proofread another author's book for an Amazon gift card. So didn't have to save pennies.

Like you, I haven't found any expiration dates on books.
Right now, my bathtub reading is "All the President's Men" by Woodward and Bernstein.

Yes

Not really. Most of my favorite authors are public domain. For those that aren't, I rely upon the library.

No way that's true. Humans aren't wired that way. That'd be like saying every human is equally attractive to you.
What, so you have never walked up to a bookshelf and thought, "Hmm, what shall I read now"?

I tend to buy stuff on sale then have a flick through my unread list to pick what to read next, even in series I follow I can quite happily be a number of years behind the latest release with no problems, there is so much I want to read that reading it now is not an issue (Still haven't got around to reading Pratchett's The Long Earth and I've had it for 3 years.

So, I can see no fault with the monkeys reasoning of just picking one of the many books he wants to read based purely on cost.

I'm with the monkey. I've maybe 50 books I've bought (not free) but not read yet though I intend to when I get caught up on my other books. I've over 400 books I'm interested in buying in my wishlist. There are very few books that I feel I must read RIGHT NOW at whatever cost. Occasionally I might spluge on one of those on impulse but it is not my standard. When I was buying paper I kept a notebooks of books to be released for each month that I wanted crossed out as I bought them. The hardbacks stayed unbought until they came out as MM paperbacks in a year or so. I'm used to waiting for price drops. Hell, if you are buying 50 or so each month you can't pay HB prices for them all. And why should you? If you won't get around to reading them for months at a minimum they might as well wait on your wishlist instead of your TBR pile.

Must be great to live in a country where libraries actually carry ebooks... I doubt I'll be able to get even a tenth of the books I want to read, in English, at my library. I gave up on them some years ago...

Problem I have with audiobooks, is that it takes longer to set up to finally be able to listen to a book. And in the evening I fall asleep, if I'm listening to a book (not so bad when you're reading, but highly annoying when you're listening!). And my travel time is also short (carpooling), so I just don't have the time to listen to the books I have!

I have ordered a new phone (5.7"), so I'll see if that'll replace my BeBook Mini or not...

There are quite a few libraries that offer non-resident library cards ($40~$125 up). Not sure how many offer out-of-country cards, but some do.
