Surrender an email address and get a free ebook (in pdf) about muscle cars.

I wondered if any Mobilereader would be interested in this. But, I'm a Mobilereader, and this book interests me. But I'm pretty strange, too. ha I would never consider making a post on Mobileread about something like NASCAR. Never. I just know that no Mobilereader is going to be interested in something like that. Ever. hahaha But, I digress.

This 408-page ebook, Muscle Cars Field Guide: American Supercars 1960-2000, is actually pretty nice. It appears to have the same text (and photos--lots of photos--in the body of the text, one full page of photo for every page of text!) as this Kindle ebook from Amazon, which is $8.69 at the present moment. And, it is very highly rated at the places that I checked--Amazon and GoodReads.

Giving your email address will result in you being subscribed to Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace's newsletter. They do not require that you surrender anything but your email address. Sweet.

The company is providing this great book to get people to sign up for their newsletter. So, no, I won't give out the direct address for the pdf. It's called ethics--do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and all that.

There is a place on nearly every page of Old Cars Weekly and Marketplace's website to sign up. The page whose address that I just gave is as good as any. Look near the top right-hand corner.

Muscle cars. Sigh. Reminds me of all of my days of misspent youth . . . .

Religion and the Decline of Magic: Studies in Popular Beliefs in Sixteenth and Seventeenth-Century England , by Keith Thomas, is $1.99 for Kindle. Since the publisher is Penguin, the price probably applies at other venues. Paperback list is $24.95.

Quote:
Witchcraft, astrology, divination and every kind of popular magic flourished in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the belief that a blessed amulet could prevent the assaults of the Devil to the use of the same charms to recover stolen goods. At the same time the Protestant Reformation attempted to take the magic out of religion, and scientists were developing new explanations of the universe. Keith Thomas's classic analysis of beliefs held on every level of English society begins with the collapse of the medieval Church and ends with the changing intellectual atmosphere around 1700, when science and rationalism began to challenge the older systems of belief.

Ah, but it would be surprising indeed to find a US$ price at Amazon UK. However, Kobo US does follow suit.

Sometimes when a publisher lowers the price it is international. But not in this case, alas .

Henry V: The Warrior King of 1415 by Ian Mortimer

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00IOWMWKM

The blurb:
This insightful look at the life of Henry V and the Battle of Agincourt casts new light on a period in history often held up as legend. A great English hero, Henry V was lionized by Shakespeare and revered by his countrymen for his religious commitment, his sense of justice, and his military victories. Here, noted historian and biographer Ian Mortimer takes a look at the man behind the legend and offers a clear, historically accurate, and realistic representation of a ruler who was all too human.

Mortimer digs up fascinating details about Henry V’s reign that have been lost to history, including the brutal strategies he adopted at the Battle of Agincourt. A fascinating look at the life of an iconic English king—ideal for students of medieval history.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ian Mortimer is a British historian and historical fiction author. He holds a PhD from the University of Exeter and a Master’s degree from the University of London, and is currently a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is the author of the Sunday Times best-selling book A Time Traveler’s Guide to Elizabethan London, as well as detailed biographies of Roger Mortimer, First Earl of March, Edward III, Henry IV, and Henry V. He is well known for developing and promoting the theory that Edward II did not meet his end in Berkeley Castle in 1327, as is held by conventional theory. His historical fiction novel, the first book in the Clarenceux Trilogy, was published under the alias of James Forrester.

The Brothers: The Tsutsumi Family by Lesley Downer - FREE
Amazon US | CA | UK | AU | DE
Quote:
‘Talking about business - you have to go right to the gates of prison ...’

‘The Brothers’ is the hundred year saga of the loves, lives and rivalries of one of Japan’s most glamorous business dynasties. Set against the background of Japan’s rise to become one of the world’s most prosperous and technically advanced countries, this is the epic story of two generations of the Tsutsumi family, famous in Japan as much for their hatred of each other as for their fabled wealth.

At the heart of it are three men: the roguish father with his string of mistresses who built the family fortune before and during World War II; the illegitimate son who inherited it and turned it into a multi-million dollar empire; and the spurned legitimate son - rebel, poet, one-time communist - who inherited a single run-down department store which he used as the basis of an empire of style.

The Tsutsumis are one of Japan’s greatest dynasties and, like the Rockefellers or Getty’s in the west, have achieved a near-mythic status. Theirs is the ultimate rags-to-riches tale, a drama of cut throat business intrigues and ties of honour, family rivalry and the trials of wives and concubines, set against the turbulent background of Japan in the twentieth century.

Lesley Downer gained unprecedented access to the Tsutsumi family and those close to them. Here is a unique window on vast wealth and power Japanese style, taking us beyond the stereotype of pinstriped drones to a sweeping drama of Shakespearian proportions.

Timeless Classics: The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith

While the American Revolution was underway, Adam Smith published An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, best known as The Wealth of Nations, and he instantly revolutionized economics. His treatise is the most famous economic work in history, and argued that free market economics are the most productive for societies. Laissez-faire economics owe its philosophical underpinnings to Smith's work, and Smith remains one of the most widely referenced and read economists in classrooms across the world today.

I know, it's esoteric. But it might be right down someone's alley. If even one person wants it, it's worth the time and effort to post it.

As for me? I'm going to wait until the 7th edition comes out. ha
