My audiobooks are free or almost free. I've never paid more than $3 for an audiobook. My main sources are public libraries and Amazon/Audible.

Amazon doesn't give them away. They give you a very steep discount via Whispersync for Voice.

...but are you able to find an audiobook at that price for every book you wish to read?

If so, please show me how to get a copy of Aurora by Kim Stanley Robison this way.

1. Check to see if there's an audiobook version available.
2. If so, check whether or not your local library has it.
3. If they don't have it, request them to obtain it.

No, I can't find those prices for everything. In those cases, I get something else at that price point. To me, there's no such thing as a must read/must listen to.

There's where we diverge.

The numbers of 18-29 year olds with e-readers is drifting down. The world will be a different place in 5 to 10 years. Demographics is destiny...

And 10 years ago, almost no one owned an ereader.

Harry answered the library book angle and my libraries have it. Whispersync pricing is $13 and that's too spendy for me. Quite a few of my audiobooks were picked up using Audible credits that cost me $0 to $3 each.

And that's why it's easy for me, but not for you.

Even so, passing on a book I want to read doesn't mean I'm settling. The next book on the list is still something I want to read.

Please read the last page of the study...it's very statistically significant.

Yes, but that means that you have to have the same level of desire for every book on your list.

No way that's true. Humans aren't wired that way. That'd be like saying every human is equally attractive to you.

Having a Millennial child, they seem "Natural Minimalists" to me. They are not likely to carry anything but their all-purpose iPhone.
I think e-ink may eventually be relegated to enthusiasts like on this forum, and perhaps folks like me who have some vision issues and e-ink makes a significant difference to us.

I don't need to have the same desire, just the same general desire. That's why it works for me and fails for most others.

With cost as the primary determinant factor?

You never feel inclined to splurge for a favorite author, or for a highly recommended tome that piques your interest and upon further investigation hits you in just the right spot in some way?
