Not odd. Burroughs died in 1950, so his work is not in the "life+70" public domain. Most of his work is in the UK public domain, due to what's called "the rule of the shorter term", but it gets rather complicated. Not surprising that the publisher has decided to keep it simple.

Thanks.

Must mentally add dates to all author references.

This is Bethany House's Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen with notes by their staff

Brits don't need to be told what a fortnight is but their explanation of 'entail' isn't bad (I have seen a really awful one from an American academic )

Also interesting from a book design point of view since the notes appear as sidebars so don't need a click to read click to return sequence.

Thanks I did, but as luck would have it I came across fortnight in " A Question of Honor " a Charles Todd book I was just reading. 2 weeks. I have come across fortnight in British books and for some reason always thought it was just a few days.

Fortnight is short for "fourteen nights", or (as Wearever noted) two weeks. (FYI, in the same vein senight, sennight , or se'night is short for "seven nights", or one week.)

Haven't run across senight ...

if it's any consolation, Wearever, for the longest time (like a good decade or better), I thought a brace was a group of three, before figuring out it's actually only two.

No, it's an archaic word, no longer used in modern English, unlike "fortnight", which is everyday British English in common use. British people would almost always say "I'm going away for a fortnight", not "I'm going away for two weeks". I'm a little surprised that it's not known in American English, because it's not a modern word.

Thanks Dngrsone, I know what you mean, I often come across words in British mysteries, and more or less approximately guess. I do look them up when I have no clue, the trouble is I compensate by thinking I must be close enough, and continue reading.

Harry, I didn't know that the English still use the word "fortnight." Do you still use the word "waistcoat?"

It so happens that we have a relatively new brewery in our area called Fortnight Brewing Co. I went to the store today, and picked up a six-pack of their X-pat IPA.

Not something that I personally possess, but yes, the word is certainly still used. It's the garment that Americans call a "vest" (a word which has an entirely different meaning in British English).
