My feelings are it would make sense to use other plugins to massage content to your liking, and leave the output plugin to do just the one job; creating the kEpub. In fact I'd even suggest that some of the options currently in the plugin should be removed; items like hyphenation, punctuation, clean up epub markup to my mind more logically belong in an ePub cleanup tool, not a device interface.

Yea, sorry, I thought this was a KePub problem. I'm not adding ePub-only things; what's there now is mostly geared at simplifying processing for the bulk of the code, or it's things that help and don't need any additional effort to make work when not converting to KePub files.

I don't know,as long as you can put off the options,it will not harm putting it into a plugin, the things like in this plugin is that due to time, i forgot a lot of options, and by setting them,they will be done in the background.
It is not a problem to run a special epub program,as long as you don't forget to do it.
It happens so much that when i am not near the computer and open a book, just to see that i forgot to edit this or that out.
They invented the word macro for it, it is not that i am to lazy just to push those 3 buttons more but it happens often that I got a call, I have to leave in a hurry, transfer quickly some books before I go and then discover that I forgot to change things.. it depends from person to person, i just love the idea that as a backup,no matter what,I can be sure that when i unplug the reader I know for sure that things are done, like the extra .css
The options put in now, must be there on request so people are wanting them i suppose.
Switch something off is a lot more easy then try to get something in,that isn't there, so your "problem" with it is much more easy to solve then mine

Sorry for the misunderstanding, i didn't knew it was only epub related, if I knew I would not ask it.
Like I said.. it is so easy to forgot that the e-reader is not just one reader that can read so many file types but that there are really 2 different readers inside and that an extra file like the xpgt will be totally ignored by one,and totally ruin (like some really do) lay-outs in the other.. The latest book with it just take off 1,5 cm on left, 1,5 cm on right and the same in bottom and top, leaving less then 5 inch to read.

Untested. When I can reproduce the error I'll try.

(I'm usually wary of doing so because it takes a considerable amount of time for the Kobo to sift through the 16GB card.)

That is in the Kobo Utilities plugin when doing compress. And it is using the wrong path. Was there an earlier error? Does calibre show books on the device or the card? The utilities plugin is getting the path to the device from calibre. If it is wrong at this point, it should have been wrong earlier.

I had a quick look at the code getting the paths. At the moment, I cannot see a way that this could happen. I'll have to have better look and hopefully see it.

How long? Unless you change the books on the card, it should be fairly quick. The first time the device sees the card, it will take a long time, but after that it should be only a few seconds. With 1100 books on a card, reinserting it in my Touch takes less than ten seconds. I would expect it to take more time with a lot more books, but, it should only be a couple of minutes.

Yeah there is —*but it's not descriptive.

Just says there was a problem reading the device information or what-have-you and then show details doesn't give any real identification of an issue other than can't find a database — it doesn't tell me where it looked.

That's why I use the Database Compress or some other action that will give a more verbose error message.

I don't know. I often change the books on the card. I also shove a lot of PDFs and CBR/CBZ graphic novels on there, and I do a daily Pocket digest and some other feeds as well —*current contents are ~11.5GB of files, visual representation is like:

`find . -type f | wc -l` says I've got 2546 files on the card. I don't know what is normal or abnormal for processing the files on a card but I'll time it for science right now.

Pulled the SD card after ejecting volumes, plugged it back in, Calibre was fine. Didn't whine about the database or anything. I just don't keep books there really except some news feeds that I didn't clean up yet. (I hate when the database blows up and I have to reinitialize the device so I made that as painless as I could by putting all my books and stuff on the SD card so I don't have to copy it all back.)

Eject successful, Kobo comes back up to Nickle or whatever, and I insert the card with no new books on it since the last time I managed it successfully.

Time to complete: About 60 seconds. Fumbled with the card a bit so give or take 5 seconds.

Plugged it back in for Calibre and… crickets:

Same drill. If I attempt a database operation it's def trying to hit the card and not the internal storage.

But, any earlier can error invalidate anything that happens later. It is possible that the reason it is trying to access the SD card here is because something broke earlier that confused things.

The "koboExtStorage" directory is put there by the firmware. The others are put there by calibre. These two files should also be in the main memory of the device. Are they?

That's wrong. But, whether that is the cause or a symptom, I cannot tell. Is it possible you copied this file there from the devices main memory? If so, that might cause it. In any case, delete both the "metadata.calibre" and "driveinfo.calibre" and see if calibre is happier.

That's sort of what I expected. It would be better if it was faster, but it's not slow enough that it would bug me.

OK, that is from the initial connect and is the first time the database is accessed. Anything later is uninteresting at this point as this is what has to be fixed.

Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me much. As jgoguen suggested a few posts ago, a debug log is needed to see what is happening. Restart calibre in debug mode, connect the device and let the connection jobs run. When the error happens, close calibre and post the complete log. From that, I can get a better idea of what is happening.

And just to be clear, this is not a problem with the extended driver. This is in the underlying KoboTouch driver or the calibre code to handle devices. Or it could be something strange about the device or the way the OS (Mac?) is presenting the device. And it is the first time I have heard of a problem like this.

My English is very bad and I apologize for that . Your pluggin is incredible, but a few days ago I'm having some problems that drive me crazy with calibre. I can send books that are already converted to Kepub however does not make me the rest. I get this error !!!

Does this happen with all books that aren't already KePubs or just this one book or just some books? The line indicated by the error is common to both the extended driver and the conversion plugin; if you try to convert this book to KePub first does that also fail?

In fact I'd even suggest that some of the options currently in the plugin should be removed; items like hyphenation, punctuation, clean up epub markup to my mind more logically belong in an ePub cleanup tool, not a device interface.

I'm not adding ePub-only things; what's there now is mostly geared at simplifying processing for the bulk of the code, or it's things that help and don't need any additional effort to make work when not converting to KePub files.

Didn't whine about the database or anything. I just don't keep books there really except some news feeds that I didn't clean up yet. (I hate when the database blows up and I have to reinitialize the device so I made that as painless as I could by putting all my books and stuff on the SD card so I don't have to copy it all back.) Eject successful, Kobo comes back up to Nickle or whatever, and I insert the card with no new books on it since the last time I managed it successfully. Time to complete: About 60 seconds. Fumbled with the card a bit so give or take 5 seconds. Plugged it back in for Calibre and… crickets: ERROR__Error, on Flickr Same drill. If I attempt a database operation it's def trying to hit the card and not the internal storage.

The line indicated by the error is common to both the extended driver and the conversion plugin; if you try to convert this book to KePub first does that also fail?
