Free today on Amazon UK - Revenge Ritual by C J Browne

'When high-flying criminologist Dr Kate Trevelyan is seconded to the Jurassic Coast to research the growing hostility towards migrant workers, she has no idea that someone is studying her every move. Or that her father would be killed in a suspicious house fire just days after her arrival in her hometown.
The stakes are raised when the police announce a verdict of accidental death and quickly close the case, forcing Kate to follow her own line of investigation. Inquisitive teenage migrant Micki knows more than he is letting on, but he is too afraid of the violent threats and racial abuse that he knows he will receive should he come forward. When glamorous property developer, Elaine Pierce, befriends her following her father’s death, Kate’s initial suspicions of the woman are confirmed when she discovers Elaine’s influence over the police force, her secret liaisons with local gang members and, more importantly, her disturbing psychological state. Why is the property mogul so intent upon obstructing Kate’s study into the riots that are threatening to destroy the very community that Elaine helped rejuvenate in the first place? It’s not until Micki is killed by the xenophobic demonstrators that the horrifying truth begins to reveal itself and Kate learns that a shocking family secret holds the answer to all her questions – one that will change her life forever. Can Kate navigate her way through the web of lies and deceit and identify her father’s killer? Will the truth finally set her free, or will it do more harm than good?'

Free today on Amazon UK -Hitler's Prodigy by Yvonne Crowe

'After being thrown together on several dangerous missions, the relationship between journalist Lina Fabini and Mossad agent David Baron has blossomed, and in their latest adventure the pair learn the cost of having each other as their Achilles heel. Ever the risk-taker, Lina takes on the case of Therese Vauclain, the murdered head of the International Monetary Fund. Next to her body a small black feather and a note scrawled with lines from Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’ were discovered; sure signs that infamous, allusive assassin the Raven has stuck again. Tasked with finding about why someone would want Therese Vauclain dead, Lina stumbles on a familiar face and a string of strange and unlikely coincidences. Fearing for her safety, David joins Lina on her quest, and soon their worst fears are confirmed as they are forced to battle a combined threat that is greater than any of their previous perilous cases. A deadly assassin who has evaded capture for eight years now wants them dead, and is somehow connected to a neo-Nazi group still fighting for the ideals of the Fuhrer decades on. Will they be able to connect these cases of old with this assassin in time? Will they ever find out the identity of the ruthless Raven?'

Enter Second Murderer (Inspector Faro #1) by Alanna Knight is FREE today (repeat)

Prime suspects are a fanatical nun, an aristocratic hermit and a public schoolboy in a chronicle of terror, betrayal, greed and violence. As this sensational case for which the murderer has been executed is reopened when a second victim is claimed, D.I Faro is drawn into the shady underworld beyond Victorian middle-class Edinburgh's theatres and salons.

Alanna Knight MBE has now written more than sixty novels (including sixteen in the acclaimed Inspector Faro series and seven featuring his daughter Rose McQuinn).

Oh good -- if they're starting over, maybe I'll catch the one or two that I missed.

And then maybe someday I'll start reading them, to find out if I actually like them! But the style (and the cover style) looks right.

I read most of them (Alanna Knight) from the library when they came out.
Don't know how they stand up as a reread.

Just noticed that The Raven in the Foregate, which is the 12th in the awesome Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters, is part of the Kindle US monthly deals for October. I usually leave the Kindle monthly deals to others to list, but it's so rare for Cadfael titles to go on sale, and it's such an awesome series, that I thought I'd mention this one here in this thread.

It's $1.99 right now, and for a couple more days (and they don't always seem to switch precisely at the end of the month, so don't push it if you want it).

link: http://www.amazon.com/Raven-Foregate...dp/B00LUZNWJA/
Spoiler:
Quote:
When a harsh priest is drowned, Brother Cadfael discovers a long list of suspects, including a young man who isn’t who he claims to be

In a mild December in the year of our Lord 1141, a new priest comes to the parishioners of the Foregate outside the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Father Ailnoth brings with him a housekeeper and her nephew—and a disposition that invites murder.

Brother Cadfael quickly sees that father Ailnoth is a harsh man who, striding along in his black cassock, looks like a doomsaying raven. The housekeeper’s nephew, Benet, is quite different—a smiling lad, a hard worker in Cadfael’s herb garden, but, as Brother Cadfael soon discovers, an impostor. And when Ailnoth is found drowned, suspicion falls on Benet, though many in the Foregate had cause to want this priest dead. Now Brother Cadfael is gathering clues along with his medicinals to treat a case of unholy passions, tragic politics, and perhaps divine intervention.

Cadfael books are regularly on sale at Amazon UK. There don't appear to be any on sale at the moment, but several have been in the "Kindle Daily Deal" in the last week. Always worth keeping an eye open for them because, as you say, it's such a good series. Even their standard price is modest, though: most are sold for only £3, which I think is excellent value for money.

They are much more expensive over here - most are published by Open Road and are in the $7 and up range at Amazon US, rather than $4.60, which is about what my friendly exchange rate calculator tells me £3 translates to. And they don't go on sale every week or so! (I think the US is, in general, much less into historical mysteries than the UK.)

A few (One Corpse Too Many, Dead Man's Ransom, Monk's Hood) have editions sold directly by Amazon Digital Services at $2.99, but most titles have only have the Open Road versions.

Since most are published by Open Road, they are couponable at Kobo US, but they are $8.69 there, so even with the 50% coupon that's good through tomorrow, they are still over $4. And for me, $4 is the absolute max I'll pay for a back-list title that I already own in DTB, even in a series I love, but I've been slowly picking them up one-by-one in ebook as I see them on sale or have better coupons at Kobo.

Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series is the UK's Kindle daily deal - all at £1.99.

I know nothing about the series, but if you love it, now's a good time to get them.

The blurb for the first one says

"LAPD detective Harry Bosch is a loner and a nighthawk. One Sunday he gets a call out on his pager. A body has been found in a drainage tunnel off Mulholland Drive, Hollywood. At first sight, it looks like a routine drugs overdose case, but the one new puncture wound amid the scars of old tracks leaves Bosch unconvinced.

To make matters worse, Harry Bosch recognises the victim. Billy Meadows was a fellow 'tunnel rat' in Vietnam, running against the VC and the fear they all used to call the Black Echo. Bosch believes he let down Billy Meadows once before, so now he is determined to bring the killer to justice."

Spoiler:
Quote:
Life can get a little wild from time to time for John Marlin, the game warden in Blanco County, Texas—but few incidents compare to the stories flying around town at the start of this new deer season. Hunters are reporting an incredible sight: a six-foot-tall, drop-dead gorgeous blonde is roaming the woods, searching out camouflage-clad men with guns and disarming them with powers of seduction the likes of which none of them have ever come across before. Everyone has a hearty laugh at the expense of a few embarrassed hunters, until one of their own turns up dead in the woods. Now Marlin has a real mystery to deal with. Meanwhile, rumors are spreading about a new Blanco resident, an ex-New Yorker named Sal Mameli who's ruffling feathers with his loud mouth and his penchant for getting his own way, no matter what the cost. Before long, John Marlin realizes he may be the only sane man in town, and he's starting to wonder if he can last much longer himself. It's just the start of another unforgettable hunting season in Bone Dry, the hilarious second novel from Edgar finalist Ben Rehder.

Death in St James's Palace by Deryn Lake is at $0.99 for about 18 more hours
Spoiler:
Quote:

At the Palace, the invited audience eagerly crane for a first glimpse of the new queen - widely rumoured to be the ugliest the country has ever seen.

With his wife ill and unable to accompany him to the investiture, Apothecary John Rawlings steps in to attend with Fielding.

But he soon finds himself embroiled in a puzzling mystery.

Nobleman George Goward tumbles down the palace’s great staircase to his death.

There are no witnesses save one: Sir John Fielding, whose senses, save sight, are renowned.

A whispered sentence, an exhalation of breath — these are the only clues to suggest Goward did not fall, but was pushed.

But by whom?

Rawlings offers his investigative skills — though his wife, Emilia, is expecting their first baby — and finds himself with no shortage of suspects…

Yet at the core of the mystery lies something more.

And the more he digs, the more he realises that the children are the key to unlocking the puzzle of the Death at St James’s Palace…

Deryn Lake is the author of the John Rawlings Mysteries, Nick Lawrence novels, and a number of historical fiction and historical romances. She was born in Essex and began writing at an early age, before eventually turning her hand to writing novels as a profession. She currently resides in Sussex. One Angry Julius Katz and Other Stories by Dave Zeltserman is $0.99 for about 1 3/4 more days. This includes the Julius Katz and Archie story, One Angry Julius and Eleven Befuddled Jurors, and some other noir-ish stories. I'm not quite sure if this counts as self-published, but I've read the Julius Katz/Archie story and quite liked it (along with the rest of the titles in Zeltserman's Nero Wolfe/Archie pastiche series), so I'm listing it anyway. The blurb indicates that this story is also available in The Julius Katz Collection, so if you have that, and only want this one story and not the others, you don't need this.

On this simple fact rests the entitlement of his widow Virginia Trent to an Industrial Death Pension.

But then the violent death of the Managing Director blurs the issue, and Ken Beacham finds himself investigating what could have been a murder.

Steadily and insidiously, the background to Trent’s death absorbs him — as does his passion for Kaye Trotter, the last person to have seen Trent alive.

Though his marriage is breaking down, and Kaye has introduced a new and unsettling version of the events leading to Leonard Trent’s death, Ken feels compelled to persist in his search for the truth.

But could it cost him his wife, his job, and perhaps, Kaye too...?

'The Vital Minute' is a gripping crime thriller from a master story-teller.

Philipa Lowe doesn't consider herself a detective.

And yet she often finds herself in the middle of a case.

This time it’s at an auction sale at a large country estate.

Following the suicide of the owner, Richard Drew, the house and contents must be sold off, leaving the family in a vulnerable state.

One item for sale is a painting by her late husband, Graham Tonkin, and Philipa is asked to judge whether it is authentic.

On her arrival, she’s taken into the confidence of Pattie Drew, who believes her father didn’t commit suicide.

If Philipa can prove it was murder, the life insurance company will pay out, saving the family from financial ruin.

The problem is, Richard Drew was found shot in the library which was locked from the inside.

When Philipa inspects the painting – which is kept in the locked library – and notices the subject's birthmark is missing, she deems it a fake.

But the birthmark is present in the painting the next morning.

Does this mean there is another entrance to the library?

Was it suicide, or murder?

Philipa delves into the family’s history and finds some troubling facts.

And as she navigates the murky waters of the Drews’ past, she must decide how deep she’s willing to go.

Deep enough to warrant her own death?

Ten of Catherine Aird's Inspector Sloan/Calleshire series (only recently released in e-book) are on sale at Kindle US for $1.99 as part of their "Holiday Deals in Kindle Books" sale, good (per the website) until Nov 30, 2015.

If you didn't/don't feel like traveling to India, per the post below, now you can get quite a few in the US with no need to take a trip.

This is one of my favorite favorite series...

Titles are:
  • The Religious Body
  • Henrietta Who
  • The Stately Home Murder, apa The Complete Steel
  • His Burial Too

The first in the series, The Religious Body, is $1.99 at most US sites, but the rest are quite expensive for backlist books, mostly in the $8 to $9 range, depending on which US site you use.

However, if you are willing to travel to Kobo India, they are mostly 237 rupees, which translates to about US $3.70. Since some Kobo India prices went up not too long ago, I'm not sure if this will be more-or-less permanent pricing, or if it's some sort of an intro price structure.

Four dollars US is about the max I would ever pay for backlist ebooks, and I'm a lot happier under three dollars for backlist, but Aird is one of my top five or six favorite mystery authors so I paid the $3.70 per book to get these, and am now indulging in reading the series straight through on my phone. (If anyone cares, my other big favs are: Sarah Caudwell, Michael Pearce, Marvin Albert, Emma Lathen and David Wishart.) They might also be couponable in India with one of the older coupons from the first post in the Kobo Deals thread (link), but I didn't find one that worked that I hadn't already used with my India account.

Several of the later books in Aird's series are also available at Kobo India for pretty reasonable prices.

Free today on Amazon UK -Sherlock Holmes and the Tandridge Hall Murder and Other Stories by Eddie Maguire

Spoiler:
The year is 1888 and Doctor Watson and Sherlock Holmes meet once again to crack a handful of new cases in this compelling collection.

'Sherlock Holmes and the Tandridge Hall Murder'

The year is 1888. Holmes and Watson are taking a stroll through Green Park, Holmes explaining his disenchantment with the dullness of London criminals. Suddenly, a terrified man approaches the famous duo and explains he has borne witness to a brutal murder. The pair are called to the countryside and the grand Tandridge Hall by the young man, Harold Norman, to solve this monstrous case.

Tension arises with the locals, as, with no evidence of an altercation, no one believes Norman’s tale.

But Holmes soon finds a body in the river near the alleged scene of the crime, under a boat, which confirms Norman’s grisly story.

With the evidence of the crime’s existence out in the open, will Holmes be able to uncover the mysterious killer?

'Death at the Cricket'

The year is 1896. Dr Watson has been invited by Stamford to watch a cricket match at the home of cricket benefactor, Lord Sheffield, and as Holmes has no cases, he joins them.
The weekend is disrupted when Stamford’s body turns up on the first morning, and a valuable painting of Lord Sheffield’s has gone missing.
All the evidence points to Stamford as the thief who met his fateful demise as he tried to sneak the painting out of the house.
Desperate to clear the name of their dear friend, the duo scramble to find an answer to this puzzling crime.
Will Holmes be able to prove Stamford’s innocence?

'The Irish Professor'
The year is 1897. John and his friend Hugo O’Neill are victims of several criminal mishaps that seem to be following O’Neill from London to Ireland.
As the incidents grow more frequent and more dangerous, Watson finds himself longing for the help of his friend Sherlock Holmes, who claimed to be in France on business.
However, nothing is as it seems. As Holmes weaves his web of lies and deception to catch a skilled criminal, Watson and O’Neill must battle their predicament alone.
Will Watson be able to solve the mystery behind these attacks without Holmes? And what was Holmes’ business in France?

'The Strange Affair at Glastonbury'
The year is 1895. After solving a case in Bath, Watson suggests they visit Glastonbury for a few days, as they aren’t expected back in London for a few days.
Upon arriving there, they discover that, to the confusion of the locals, seemingly random things have started to go missing in the dead of night, and all road signs have been turned backwards.
As every night brings a new surprise, Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes are called upon to help by the local constable. However, the bizarre occurrences appear to have nothing in common except for the time of the crime.
Can the duo figure out if they are indeed related and put a stop to things before they escalate?

'A Voice From the Ether'
The year is 1896. Jabez Wilson, an old client of the sleuth, and owner of a pawnshop, has been unable to pay for Holmes’ services in the past. But when Holmes bumps into the man again months later, Wilson presents the detective with a phonograph by way of payment.
Upon setting it up, the duo discover that the previous owner’s last recording had contained an ominous message.
Can Watson and Sherlock follow the clues left behind on the phonograph in time? Will they save a man’s life, or will they be too late to be of any help?
