@rupor, I'm almost inclined to say you have a bad hardware.
Except for the touch screen insensitivity I don't experience any of your hw complaints. (I did get the screen too cold stuff though).

For the contrast and the software (user interface, fonts, etc) which other reader are you comparing to ?

@dnastase - I have wide array of old readers (including Nook ST) and Kindle PW2. All of them have different problems. As usual - balance between pro and cons. I jumped to the GL+ hoping it will provide experience similar to old Sony PRS (with more modern hardware) willing to invest some time to get there. At this point I am afraid my assumptions were wrong - do not see why somebody will want to spent time and money (not big money, but money nevertheless) finishing what should've been done by manufacturer in a first place. To me device software (and to some degree hardware) feels so unfinished - it is almost insulting, but your experience may be different.

Just to illustrate, Theonna from russian the-ebook.org forum (not sure if she is presented here - many people are) made a couple of quick pictures:

http://www.dgread.com/read/index.php...-PPW-Nook-Plus

http://www.dgread.com/read/index.php...-Dontsova-Book

Not striving for real comparison, but it illustrates what I am talking about.

Too rephrase - feels like this thing should cost $60 and be completely open to even consider it...

Yes, I think I know what you mean and feel.
Like I said in another post: it's all a matter of expectations. Mine are very low right now (w/ respect to features) so from my point of view the NGP is a waterproof NG. So as long as I can root it it will be worth it.

Also I think you're way pickier than I am

Uhmm, I don't see at all what's the problem w/ the NGP in these pictures...
Both readers present perfectly legible (from all points of view) text IMHO.

Just received mine yesterday. Handsome unit. Has anyone figured out how to skip the registration / OOBE (out of box experience)? I (foolishly) called Nook support. They hung up on me when I asked...twice. It's really easy on previous editions but this is entirely new hardware. The Nook button plus the top swipe doesn't do anything.

@rupor: I have had a few of your experiences - mainly with the limitations of the stock reader - but I also think you have faulty hardware. Try exchanging yours for another one and see if you have the same issues.

On my NGP, contrast is good - not quite as good as a Voyage or PW3 - but not that far behind. Lighting is pretty even - again, maybe a notch below the Voyage, but solid. Text and images are sharp, as one would expect. As for the stock reader, the formatting seems a bit off at the start of chapters. Not much, but just enough to be irritating. The heading is too close to the main text, for one thing.

There are ten fonts to choose from, and one can adjust font size, margins, and line spacing. The options for margins and line spacing are limited. I find that Neo Reader on my Onyx device does a better formatting job all around, and offers more options. If we could get Neo Reader or KOreader on this device, we'd already be making big strides. The stock reader is adequate, but for most people who inhabit this forum, it will seem limited in available options.

It's still too early to tell about battery life. The jury is still out on that one.

Connections with my Mac are a bit frustrating. It will usually take two or three attempts for Android File Transfer to "see" my NGP. Then it (and Calibre) work fine until the next day, when it will take two or three attempts to get connected again. Not sure what is going on there.

The frontlight control works well enough, but is not as precise as I would like. The control on the Onyx is better in that regard.

The NGP may not be THE best eReader out there, but it's good overall - even with the limitations. No "perfect" device exists, and each one of us has our own definition of what a "perfect" device would look like. Still, an Android-based eInk device with 300 dpi is pretty unique at this point. If it can be rooted, most of the limitations can be bypassed/improved (different reader app, different frontlight controls, and so forth).

So ends my rambling pseudo-review!

Or, if it's convenient, go to the store and play with the couple of readers on display. Will be easy to compare with your existing device this way.

@rupor: btw, did you do the upgrade ? there was one the same day that it was released...
The reason I'm asking is because I don't see this full page refresh you're mentioning. It behaves correctly/nicely for me.

@dnastase - I did upgrade. And I was in the store - both screen and lag were apparent, I just wanted to convince myself that I am wrong.

Guys, thank you for for your concerns, but I really do not think I have defective unit Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so for you it may be OK to put up with apparent deficiencies when there are better hardware/software combinations. So what that combination is rare? It does not mean that I will have to put up with somebody not doing proper job and charging money for it. As it was said I am picky It is also possible that I am missing something here, however for me - I was looking for something which I could use the same way as I did with my old Sony units - invest time and effort in finishing up software and enjoy. Most of this work is carried by manufacturer (it would be ideal if all of it would be done by them) but I have to build on solid foundation as this is not a full time job for me. Hence my apparent frustration, as I do not think this device is what I am looking for.

I for one didn't find a way to skip registration. Thank God that it still allows to skip adding a credit card ...

The background of the nook is darker than the Kindle. But, the font is darker on the nook than the Kindle. On the Kindle, the font looks grayish and the font on the nook looks darker. So the contrast overall on both devices may be similar.

Yeah, same here. I guess there's no harm in that, though I still hate being forced to register to use anything (especially when we know -- even if we don't know how -- the thing doesn't need to be registered in order to be used).
