It is amazing to me how many people place the blame for their inability to focus on just one task on a machine that is capable of doing more than one thing. My Note 2 stays in airplane mode unless I'm traveling, and I have no problem reading my books and listening to my music while doing so. It makes for a much nicer commute to and from work. I have no interest in being on FB or playing games from my phone, it requires too much scrolling and enlarging of the text to make it worth my time. That is what I have computer for. |

I have the KOBO Glo HD and am very pleased with it. I want to buy a second 300dpi ereader in the next month and am thinking of the Kindle Voyage (perhaps the 3G version).
So, I was wondering what you found different between them, besides price? |

Unless you use Calibre, they are two different stores and formats.

I buy DRM free books so I can have both an epub and a mobi file and I keep the same books on each device, manually syncing as I need to. I just find the Glo HD more easier on the eyes, I can have my own font, at the size I want so the text is darker than the Voyage. I have to manually adjust the light on the Glo but its just a slow slide down the left hand side, so I can tailor my brightness easier than manually on the Voyage, and more fine tuning than using the Voyage auto adjust. I don't miss the page turn sensors at all. Its just a more gentler screen to read on and suits my eyes better. |

I understand that. I don't believe I blamed the device. It is one reason why some folks will continue to use an e-reader. I am weak. I love Ascension and Splendor and Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan and Agricola and Ticket to Ride. They are all fun games that require some brain power and take time. I also cannot play them on my Kindle, so I read on my Kindle.

I agonized over buying an ebook reader or a tablet
I was very attracted to the kindle readers, and not so much to the Kindle Fire tablets.
However I found a great deal on a pretty generic Lenovo android tablet and bluetooth keyboard combination, and couldn't be happier with my selection. It is much more versatile than a reader, and offers me not only the complete Kindle experience but allows me to also tap into the various ePub vendors as well. That's a big plus. As far as the screen burning out my eyes, these things just aren't powerful enough to do that. Though I do reverse the image to White text on black background in a darkened room. |

Apparently those doing studies don't bother to TRY to optimize the reading experience on a tablet. Turn down the brightness and use a night theme...makes reading a pleasure in a dark room

I find myself reading more on my 9inch Android tablet simply because Overdrive has improved a lot for me because of the added viewing adjustments (parchment background, variable line spacing and margins, etc), there is the ease of borrowing ebooks directly from our local library via the Internet and I mainly read indoors.
I keep the Kindle DXG for my technical library because the size suits PDFs and ebooks with diagrams and the e-ink makes it easy to read on the commuter train. I always had some dis-satisfaction with my Sony PRS650 solely because of screen size - I find 6inches is too small for my reading enjoyment. When it dies, I will shift completely for leisure reading to the Android tablet. |

And with the added benefit that it doesn't wake your sleeping partner if you are restless and decide to read in the middle of the night.

I was in the LCD camp for several years, until eInk hit a certain threshold of pixel density and front-lighting got refined a bit. At the same time, smartphone screens, specs and battery life were improving, so that my last couple smartphones made a tablet redundant for tasks other than reading. Now, the tablet mostly gathers dust while the KPW2 has a reserved spot in my go bag. A tablet would be fine for reading, but the Kindle is just a little easier to carry, a little easier to hold, a little easier on the eyes, and a lot more likely to be ready-to-go with my current read the moment I whip it out, no matter how long it's been or what I've done in the interim.
Granted, tablets and ereaders alike are 100% lifestyle tech. They're not necessary for anything, so how useful they are depends entirely upon how you use them. If you have compelling reasons to be carrying a tablet and no vision issues compelling you to go eInk, then reading on a tablet is probably the way to go. If either a tablet or ereader would be too much baggage or certain to be lost, stolen or destroyed, then sticking with a smartphone might be your best bet. If your discretionary income is truly marginal and you'll have no other computing/internet resources, dumbphone + tablet might deliver the best value. My own situation has changed at least as fast as the technology in the six years I've read ebooks. There were times when I had significant commutes on public transit, times I worked from home, times I commuted by car, and now I walk to work. My income and the proportion of that income a dedicated reading device would represent, have varied considerably over that time. Even my reading habits, novels vs. periodicals vs. graphic novels, fluctuate in ways that influence what devices I'll carry and which I'll buy. It may be mostly fallacious thinking to try to shape anecdotes into trends in our little backwater of the tech world. |
