The directory rename trick has been tested on 5.6.1.1 and found working.

The only relevant thing I wanted to point out and ask is for users of 5.6.5 to know based on the website that a release wasn't out yet for Paperwhite 2013.

I still say it's probably safe to bring it out of Airplane quickly especially by making the purchase with another device first since the website doesn't indicate any updated releases.

I have a Paperwhite 2013. Doesn't it say that in my info box?

Plus Karma because this is a lot more intelligent explanation than stating the exceptional unlikeliness of a Kindle developer actually uploading the firmware at the same time that you turned your device's wireless connection back on. Given the relative uncertainty, I'd like to point any frustrations away from good forum advice and towards the limited freedom afforded to us by our Amazon overlords to decline or postpone updates.

If you really needed to, it *should* be safe to do so for a limited period of time.

No matter what, the Kindle can't download a 150+ MB download in 30 seconds or less.
And Amazon has consistently released full firmware images for a long time now.
Just make sure you delete any partially downloaded update immediately afterward!!

Or you could depend on the unlikelihood of an update being released right then, and the fact that the update is rolled out in waves over the course of ~weeks...

But as knc1 says, why risk it. Sideloading works 100%

• Amazon might release an incremental patch for once.
• There is still that chance it will be released at that time.
• Someone is going to be first on the list to receive the update, and you'd feel pretty silly if it was you.

The risks outweigh the reward.

Or if you must wifi it to your kindle then then buy it on another device and then just turn wifi on to download so its on for the shortest time.

I tried that but it says DRM is for different user. Which is odd because Kindle for PC and my kindle pw2 is under same account.

DRM is per-device, not per-account.

I am not so sure of that myself.
I seem to recall that the todo list is prioritized (I.E: it will download updates before other downloads).
I will do some more testing today and update my thread about blocking updates (on 5.6.1.1 anyway).

It is a small risk that an update download would beat a book download, but it can if your unlucky enough.
