“The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.” ― Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe |

Ernest Hemmingway always claimed that the best thing he
ever wrote was the simple, six word line: 'For Sale;Baby shoes;Never worn.' Depending how you read it, it's heartbreaking on so many levels. |

Douglas Adams was one of the great creative writers... a real trailblazer if ever there was one.

"Now there is another thing book writers do in their Prefaces, which is to introduce a mass of nincompoops of whom no one ever heard, and to say 'my thanks are due to such and such' all in a litany, as though any one cared a farthing for the rats!"

My apologies to one and all, for the Hemmingway
story 'error'. I had been told, or read somewhere, many years ago, that the 'story' was in fact the work of Hemmingway, and took it at face value. Like so many urban myths, it appears that I was wrongly informed. Mea culpa! I still think it is a poignant little thing in its own right, whoever originally authored it. |

The way I heard that story was that Hemingway wrote it in response to someone who bet him that he couldn't write a six-word story that could make people cry. Of course, we all now know that Hemingway apparently had nothing to do with it, but I also accepted the story at face value.

On Tea by Edmund Waller (Tea was popularized in Britain by Charles II's Portuguese Queen Catherine of Braganza)
"The best of Queens, and best of herbs, we owe To that bold nation, which the way did show To the fair region where the sun doth rise, Whose rich productions we do justly prize. The Muse's friend, tea does our fancy aid, Repress those vapors which the head invade, And keep the palace of the soul serene, Pit on her birthday salute the Queen." |
