Maybe we need a "Media Deals" thread for music, movies. etc. (non-eBook/audiobook media), or is everyone fine with the stuff going here?

I'm going to ask the Team about this. I for one would love it especially with Christmas coming up a thread for such deals.

Then maybe an add on to the title? So people who don't know to look for these types of things in a tablet/eReader thread. Doesn't matter to me one way or the other as long as we have someplace to post such deals.

Although come to think of it didn't the monkey say this thread was going to be being closed soon?

I think its own thread would be best as phones and media players can play these types of files too

I've started a discussion with the Team and will let you know what is decided.

I'm gonna shut this thread down on 31 Oct and continue these discussions in the Black Friday thread. On 01 Jan 2016, I'll start it up again.

A thread title change is easy to do. The only reason I never did it from the start is that music, videos, games, etc have nothing to do with books. As such, I figured it would get shot down. Doing it the way we do now sorta keeps it under the radar, even though everyone knows it's going on.

I'll back either option -- keeping it here or starting a separate thread. If we go with a separate thread, you'd be my choice for hosting it.

Do you really think that's a good idea? "Black Friday" is a US phenomenon; we are a world-wide site, and your "Black Friday" is of no relevance (and indeed will not be understood) by most people here. Perhaps it might be better to start a separate thread for your US-specific "Black Friday" deals and leave this one alone?

This was mentioned above and it seemed everyone was happy with it. I think those around here have heard of it and other countries have gotten in on the ad op. Kobo does a black friday deal thingie (and boxing holiday and every other holiday they can.) It's been working pretty well.

You're not the only one expressing this sentiment. I did it this way last year and it worked out quite well; but that doesn't mean it has to be that way this year. My reasoning for just one thread was to keep the deals together. Two threads tend to fragment the deals with the potential for missing a deal or creating unnecessary duplication.

I realize that Black Friday is primarily a US event, but it's also safe to say that most of the deals posted in his thread are from US stores. Black Friday was once a one to three day shopping event. That's no longer the case. Thanks to the explosion of online shopping, pretty much any sale during the months of Nov and Dec are Black Friday related in one way or another. Additionally, these sales are frequently open to non-US residents.

There are several options for handling this:
  • one thread (Tablets & eReaders) running from Jan to Oct, followed by a second thread (Black Friday) running from Nov to Dec --> current system
-or-
  • two separate threads during Nov & Dec --> Tablets & eReaders and Black Friday
-or-
  • one year round thread (Tablets & eReaders) w/ Black Friday emphasis during Nov & Dec

I'll leave this open for additional feedback to see what members would prefer.
.

I'm in favor of the Black Friday/rest of year split, reflecting that most of the deals, and most of the great deals, come at the holiday period. I think people get the terminology. In any case, as tubemonkey says, most of the deals are US.

My bottom line, though, is that since tubemonkey does the lion's share of the work in creating and maintaining the deals threads especially at the run-up to the holidays, it's his call. I'm mostly along for the ride (although I post if I run across something).

I've no strong feelings about it either way. Just wondered, as I said, how meaningful "Black Friday" would be to many of our members .

Yep.

Personally, I feel Black Friday has lost most of its significance, even in the US. Sales are so spread out now. I'd prefer just one yearlong thread for each type of product.

It was one of our most popular threads last year. I see no reason to change how it's done Monkey. It is a lot of work for you to maintain but we members we really love that thread. Black Friday is more of a season now thanks to the internet. We also have Cyber Monday which is part of that season. It's a great time to buy alot of things you never need. lol
