The University of Manchester (England, in case there is a university by that name somewhere else) Library has published a booklet of 25 pages called First Impressions: How Printing Began. It is a free pdf.
Here's a short description: The PDF . . . is an introduction to printed books. It looks at how books are printed, where printing started and the early pioneers of the printed word. Great for a background to printing, looking at inventors or the spread of language. The book looks to be very well done. It is certainly attractive. From what I gather, the book is intended for children, though not young ones--probably preteen to early teens. So why am I not posting it on a children's nonfiction thread? Well, sometimes I don't want a large book with "heavy" text that forces me to have to concentrate a whole lot. Sometimes I want a book like this one to get a quick overview of some subject. In fact, I downloaded and saved it for myself for just that reason. Maybe you will find this tome to be just what you want, for that reason or some other one. Ironically, this book about printing of physical books appears to be available only as an electronic book. ha I'm going to give you two links here. One is the direct link to the pdf book and the other one is the indirect link. The webpage that you get when you follow the indirect link also shows how you can access, also freely, some other nice resources on the same subject, including an interactive website on the history of printing. |

Huge Sale on Collins Publishers Kindle Ebook Titles.
Okay, I don't know very much about this sale, yet. But, I know enough to know that it holds potential to get Mobilereaders really good prices on a large number of reference and school-type ebooks, so I'm going to go ahead and tell you what little that I do know.
Collins Publishers, a subsidiary or something like that of HarperCollins Publishers, has marked down in the last 24 hours or so, it seems, a huge number of ebooks. I think that reference and school-type books may be the only thing that they publish. I think that the publisher is oriented, at least, toward the U.K., as opposed to American, English language. Here's an example of one of Collins' ebooks on sale. It is the Collins English Dictionary & Thesaurus. The digital list price is $14.99. The print list price is a whopping $79.00. The Kindle ebook is currently $3.99. Oh, I might make mention of the fact that this book is just short of 2000 pages long! About the only way that I know how to find the markdowns, right now, is to just do a search in the Kindle store for Collins titles. Here is the link for that search, with the ebooks priced low to high. Then, you might want to select a category from the menu on the left-hand side. The one that I selected to find the example above was "Dictionaries and Thesauruses." Of course, one main shortcoming of this search is that you don't know from it alone how much the ebooks were priced before being marked down. Now, here's where I ask for the help of other Mobilereaders: if you know of a better way to find these markdowns, please let us know! Thanks. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 10-18-2015 at 07:40 AM. |

Free Pdf of David M. Levy's How the Dismal Science Got Its Name.
You can get a free pdf copy of How the Dismal Science Got Its Name: Classical Economics and the Ur-Text* of Racial Politics, by David M. Levy. The freebie is courtesy of The University of Michigan Press.
It's not available in ebook form from Amazon, apparently. However, a physical copy of this book would set you back a minimum of $17 there (and that's for a used copy). It's 320 pages long. Here's a list of the chapters in the book: Part 1. Two Sciences in Collision: The Dismal and the Gay. 1. Poets Come, Bringint Death to Friends of the Dismal Science. 2. Ecce Homo [sic]: Symbols Make the Man. 3. Beginning with an Exchange or with a Command? 4. A Rational Choice Approach to Scholarship. Part 2. Market Order or Hierarchy? 5. Debating Racial Quackery. 6. Economic Texts as Apocrypha. 7. Hard Times and the Moral Equivalent of Markets and Slavery. Part 3. The Katallactic Moment. 8. Exchange between Actor and Spectator. 9. The Partial Spectator in the Wealth of Nations: A Robust Utilitarianism. 10.Katallactic Rationality: Language, Approbation, and Exchange. 11.Adam Smith's Rational Choice Linguistics. 12.Bishop Berkeley Exorcises the Infinite. Here's the direct link to the pdf. Here's the link to the Amazon webpage for the book. * Ur-Text: the hidden original from which all others descend in confused and imperfect fashion. Pyrrhus Press reprint
Medieval Medicine (1920) by James Walsh James Joseph Walsh, M.D., LL.D., Litt.D., Sc.D. (1865-1942) the story of the medical sciences in the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages are usually assumed to begin with the deposition of Romulus Augustulus, 476, and end with the fall of Constantinople, 1453. In this little volume, then, we have to outline the history of human efforts to prevent and treat the ills of mankind for nearly one thousand years. Until recently, it has been the custom to believe that there was so little of genuine interest in anything like the scientific care of ailing human beings during these centuries, that even a volume of this kind might seem large for the tale of it. Now we know how much these men of the Middle Ages, for so long called the "Dark Ages," were interested in every phase of human progress. They created a great art and literature, and above all a magnificent architecture. We have been cultivating the knowledge of these for several generations, and it would indeed be a surprise to find that the men who made such surpassing[Pg viii] achievements in all the other lines of human effort should have failed only in medicine http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LG9YVE0/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LG9YVE0/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00LG9YVE0/ |

The cynic in me says that that the situation is not surprising. No one ever accused these publishers of made-over public domain books of pursuing excellence. There may be some publishers operating with a similar modus operandi which do try to provide excellent products (there's always at least one black sheep in every family), but I'm hard-pressed right now to think of any names. However, the economist in me injects a dose of common sense. Companies with a business model of providing excellence in quality + selling at fire-sale prices are probably not going to last long. Something is going to get short shrift, and it's usually quality. |

I tend to roll my eyes when I see people get excited at some PD publisher making a dozen or two PD books free for a limited time, when I know that the same books are free all the time here, or at PG, or Google. While Google has the largest collection of free PD material, I won't download it to dedicate ereaders because the Google conversions to ebook formats are total crap. The scanned images on the Google Books website are readable on a PC though. I try not to bring this up very often. I realize people are just trying to be helpful, and in some cases the temporarily free PD may actually be superior to (or at least more convenient for Kindle owners than) the always free versions elsewhere. However, some people get quite upset if they feel they're being told their contribution isn't all that useful, and then nasty flame wars erupt. I don't think it's ever happened in this thread, and I hope it never does. |

PG now issues some books with clickable TOCs but the older ones never have this so a good reason may exist for taking the Kindle freebie. The question is, why do they omit illustrations ? Their plan is to add a cover image and a clickable TOC and push it out so I don't see how taking the non-illustrated version helps unless Amazon objected to the larger file size. Does anyone review PG output for points like that ? { a very recent Gutenberg ebook with a clickable TOC and clickable footnotes and index. } The Grateful Dead by Gordon Hall Gerould http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/39408 |
