I also agree. Well worth the time to read the series.

I think Rusch intended this to be a series originally that could be enjoyed as standalone books. But there's a lot of backstory you'd be missing if you didn't start from the beginning. I'm the sort that just has to start at the beginning...if I know it exists.

Also, if you do decide to start with this one - if you like it enough to want to keep reading, go back and start with Book 1. There's a subseries within the Retrieval Artist series (Anniversary Day Saga) that needs the background from the other books, IMHO. The subseries consists of the last 8 novels in the series, and they definitely are not written as standalones.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers, so I apologize if this all sounds vague.

I also agree with FizzyWater, while you can read this book as a stand alone you would be missing information from the previous novels which would make the book even better.
Book 1 The Disappeared: A Retrieval Artist Novel
https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...l-artist-novel is currently $2.99 and all these books are couponable at kobo should you wish to go through the series. There is also a prequel short novel which you could also start with and which has previously been discounted although is not currently on sale called The Retrieval Artist: A Retrieval Artist Short Novel

The first book in the Retrieval Artist series, The Disappeared, is always for sale at the "taster" price of $2.99.

You can probably do fine with Recovery Man on a standalone basis, but I recommend reading The Disappeared first if it's not a financial hardship -- it will give you a good basis. There are 4 other books in between that and Recovery Man, but I don't think missing them would be a crisis.

But seriously, if you're into SF detective stories, Rusch's Retrieval Artist books are like crack, and if you're like me, you'll just end up buying them all. I also really like her Diving Universe novels (the first one of those, Diving Into the Wreck, is always for sale at the "taster" price of $3.99).

There are also a bunch of Retrieval Artist novellas and Diving Universe novellas -- but some of them have been incorporated into the full-length novels, so you will want to check before buying those.

The Atlantis Gene by A.G. Riddle. On special at Amazon for $1.37
http://www.amazon.com/Atlantis-Gene-.../dp/B00NLGBLK8

I've read this, and am partway through book 2 (The Atlantis Plague) and have book 3 at the ready (The Atlantis World)

Heres a brief summation from Amazon
Quote:
THE BATTLE TO SAVE HUMANITY HAS BEGUN.

Off the coast of Antarctica, a research vessel discovers a mysterious structure buried deep within an iceberg. Entombed for thousands of years, it can't possibly be man-made. But a secretive and ruthless cabal think they know what it is... and what it means.

The Immari have spent millennia preparing for the return of humanity's ancient enemy. Faced with an extinction-level threat, they believe mankind's only chance of survival will mean sacrificing 99.9% of the planet's population. It's a price the Immari are prepared to pay.

Geneticist Kate Warner and intelligence agent David Vale may have a chance to avert the looming catastrophe, but only if they can decode the secrets of the Atlantis Gene and unlock the truth about humanity's origins.
Really enjoying the trilogy so far .

Seems also that the iBooks Store also has the same/similar prices. I can only see the Aus prices, but still cheap as chips at $1.99

FYI - the Diving Universe novels are written in first person, present tense. I really wanted to like them - I think the concept sounds interesting. But I just couldn't get past that present tense. To me it always sounds like two teenagers talking ("so, I go into the store and they have this dress to DIE for...." "then my boyfriends says 'BLAH BLAH BLAH'").

And how is it we don't have a "warning Will Robinson" smilie?!

Thanks, I'm not a huge fan of Brooks these days but these are a fun re-read if I get bored for like $.67 a piece.

I think his Landover books are underrated. That first book especially seems original and unique among fantasy stories.
His Shannara books seem to have a sort of 'sameness' to all the books. Yet when I want something comfortable and familiar I find myself going back to them. You can depend upon them to be a good read. He plots these out with extensive outlines and unlike some authors they feel well thought out and complete, at least they seem so to me

X-link to the Comics megathread for the current Humble Bundle which contains a few sfnal comics:

Humble Comics Bundle Udderly Gigantic Top Cow Collection contains at the more-than-average tier the 1st collection of Tales of Honor, an original GN series based on Baen author David Weber's highly popular Honor Harrington MilSF novels. There's also some other non-superhero GNs with sfnal/supernatural plots in them, and a complete collection of the Rising Stars sci-fi superhero series by J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame.
