I guess the only issue would be actually getting the account reopened to enable a device to be registered. I would imagine that's particularly stressful on its own. It's fine if you live in a big town and can easily get hold of a device once Amazon have given you a time period, say 24 hours, to buy and register a device but I'd hate to buy one then find I couldn't get it registered.

And of course this thread is mainly concerned about ebooks which tbh are easy enough to back up. For ebooks I would simply use another make of ereader.

If anyone has information (not rumour or speculation) about continued access (or not) to other digital content (e.g. music, audiobooks), I would be very pleased for them to post it here.

Surely music is a non-issue given that mp3s are sold drm-free anyway?

Not everyone downloads them, though. You might, for example, only play them from your Amazon library via the "Amazon Music" app on your phone.

Audiobooks are DRMd, I was advised by email that if an Amazon account is closed then the Audible Library for any linked Audible account would be inaccessible.

An unlinked Audible account should not be affected though. I have both.

Ah, yes. That's not something I'd ever do so it didn't occur to me. But to me that's more akin to someone not bothering to back up their files rather than losing access to drm'd content that you'd want to get on a new device.

You're right, of course, but I suspect there's a lot of people out there who would give you a blank look if you were to ask them if they'd backed up their files.

The thread is very interesting. Somebody with nick WD had his/her account closed and they told this user that they unlocked the account for 48 hours so that he could purchase a Kindle device elsewhere and register it to that account.
Later on WD reports that he/she was able to install Kindle for PC and download all the books there. This is all you need for de-DRMing of the books through Apprentice Alf tools.

Interesting developments on the Amazon thread.

User "Melly" who had her account closed for returning too many items (she notes 30+ ebooks but does not mention physical goods) posted the email she received from Amazon about her account:

Hello,

I understand your concern regarding the access to the digital content on your device.

After a thorough review, we have decided not to restore your full access to this account. You will not be able to place orders with our site.

If you have any digital content on this account, you can access the content from the "Manage Your Content and Devices" link on the Your Account menu on Amazon.com (www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle).

Please understand that as your account is closed, you will only be able to access the content on devices which have already been registered to your account.

Melly goes on to state that she still is able to purchase ebooks from Amazon (but not physical items) so apparently Amazon only bars the ability to purchase physical goods once your account is closed for too many returns.

Sounds like a contradiction. Here we have one bit of information saying that new devices could be registered and now we have information saying that's not the case and only digital content can only be accessed on existing devices.

So which is it?

Returning 30+ ebooks is a lot! I am surprised she able to buy ebooks. She talked about returning 1 on the advice of Amazon. She also mentioned Library ebooks & getting freebies.
