Thanks and thanks to you for the thread, which has been most helpful on getting me to reexamine and change my practices.

Not to be complacent, either; as we all know, recidivism is always lurking.

I am over my budget for the year to the end of October.

But I couldn't resist the Lost Fleet novels by Jack Campbell on offer at £0.99 each. I have the first series (six novels) which were solid 4 star reads for me.

Clearly I should have been even more frugal during the rest of the year! Again!

But I still have hopes that I'll manage to stay in budget for the year as a whole.

Ah, if we didn't have hopes, what would life be. Even when the hopes are faint. :P

Seriously, I think you're doing well. And no way could you pass up a those books at $1.50 each. I admit, I burned out on them (as audio books) after about the 4th or 5th, but I did enjoy them until then.

I've turned them down once, and so far I am managing to resist. I picked up the first one for 0.99 when it was a daily deal, and I'm not planning to splurge on the rest of the series until I've read it. I'd really only be losing a few pounds if I bought the rest at full price, compared to gaining 5 books I might never get to. It will only become a saving around book 3 or 4, which is probably years off. And this is the second time this year that they've been on offer.

I've been doing very well at resisting deals lately. I think I more or less have it cracked. There was a minor slip-up with a Bernard Cornwell the other day, when I was buying something else, but I feel I've been on top of it the last few months.

Ah - well, if you haven't read any of Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series, then you're wise to resist. I've read the first six and liked them. SO for me, buying the next 8 makes sense.

The Lost Stars, a sub series of The Lost Fleet, is also very good. It is up to 3 books now with a fourth one due May of 2016.

I read Dauntless four years ago and gave it 2 stars. I don't remember why I rated it so low, therefore, I passed on this deal.

You're definitely going to get to them before I would, so, yes, it might make more sense for you. I'm trying not get too much depth on my TBR, and if a whole series comes up that I'm interested in, I try to stick to just the first/next book.

A couple of years ago I finished collecting the complete works of Agatha Christie, mostly in used paperbacks, which is canonically about 80 books. I think I still have about 55 to go, which will take me four and a half years if I read one a month. I didn't really need to collect that far ahead.

Snap! Except that I got them in ebook from Fictionwise at less than $1 each a few years back. I'm slowly working my way through them. I don't want to finish them too quickly!

It's getting towards time for thinking about my goals for next year.
I re-calculated all my book purchases from dollars into Sterling at the start of this year (or was it last year?). And since I also have notes on when I bought everything, I thought it might be instructive to see how much I 'usually' spend, and compare it with this year.

2002 £147.87
2003 £399.94
2004 £253.02
2005 £497.34
2006 £279.14
2007 £376.88
2008 £1028.60 (DRM removal tools become available)
2009 £579.35
2010 £164.21
2011 £349.49
2012 £235.88
2013 £482.57
2014 £317.23
2015 (anticipated) £300

Hmm... an average of just under £400/year. But since I'm clearly still spending too much on ebooks (given that my TBR has grown this year so far), I think I must give myself a tighter budget.

Perhaps a very tight budget. Could I manage £15/month? I think it might be worth a go, even though I've only managed that twice, and one of those was the very start of my ebook buying.
Let's go for it! £2015: £15/month maximum (averaged)

In the past month I've bought two cheap books at 99p, borrowed two library books, and splurged a whole £2.50 on a book I've been waiting for nearly a month to drop from £3.66 (and I'm still annoyed I missed getting it for the £2 it was for 24hrs one day before I bought it).

You really need me to sit on your shoulder and constantly remind you of why you started this thread....

Of course you'd soon get fed up of my thriftiness and brush me off your shoulder and frantically grab all the books I'd stopped you from buying.

Good luck with your £15 budget. Go on, you know you can do it!

One of my problems is I can not resist buying books that I know my wife will want to read. For example, she likes the Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia MacNeal. The fifth book, Mrs. Roosevelt's Confidante, will be released on October 27th and I will pay full price to get it for her.

My feeling is that if I set myself a budget I'll still want to snap up all the tempting bargains I see. More crucial for me, I think, is not to buy things I'm not going to read imminently, no matter how good the deal is. I might end up paying more, if I pass up an offer on something I later want to read, but I think that I will save over all. And if something's been on offer once, it probably will be again.

I'll probably budget the same $500 for 2016. I spent so little this year that I'm not in fear of overspending. Kobo codes, credits and public library lends help keep my money with me.
