Is a KV worth it?

Hmm, new Voyage is coming out? I just picked up the Kindle Voyage yesterday! Maybe I should think about returning it...

I'm coming from the Kindle PW1, and it is definitely worth the upgrade for me, everything Dan mentioned is valid for me as well! I did not like the screen/bezel of the PW1, never did and it actually annoyed me. So happy with the KV so far.

Just keep it. No one knows if there is a new one coming out any time soon. If you like the one you have, that's all that matters.

The Voyage came out about October 21 last year. So it's due for a version 2. But NO ONE KNOWS. Maybe hold on for a bit while you are still in the return period, then you have the option. But yeah, you're in a tough spot. If the new one comes out after your return period, you won't feel good. On the other hand, your current Voyage will soon be able to be jail-broken. If that matters to you, I'd keep it. If it doesn't, I'd be sorely tempted to return it just in case. It sucks when you buy something and a month later the new version comes out. Maybe call them and see what they say.

Frankly I don't see what Amazon can do to significantly upgrade the Voyage, so maybe it won't make that much difference anyway.

I have a KV for almost a year now and I plan to upgrade to a new one come January (if a new version comes out by that time)

HOWEVER, if all the upgrades will be specs-wise and won't significantly add anything to my reading experience, then I'll hold off. I don't think I'll pay another $199 just for a waterproof feature since I don't read in the water AT ALL. Big screen? Very tempting. At first, I thought I'll buy in a heartbeat but now? The size of the Voyage already grew on me. We'll see when it comes out

For me, the small size of the Voyage is a benefit. If I want to read something on a larger screen (eg a PDF) I use my iPad.

Jon does have a point, even though he sometimes forgets that he is expressing an opinion - although it comes across as a blanket damnation - and that his needs pertain to a specific use.

Do, however, check out whether this factor may also apply to you.

I first read of the font size issue on MR written by a Kindle owner. I have my own way of dealing with that font size issues if the device doesn't have enough sizes. It's an issue that also affected Sony Readers pre-650 (or was it T1) when Sony added more sizes so it wasn't as bad.

What I would like is a font size control like we have on some programs where your size up/down goes a small size so you can get almost any size you want.

I have a Kindle and I have a Kobo. It is true that I have more font control on the Kobo than I do on the Kindle, although on side-loaded books much of that control doesn't seem to work. I have read in this forum about ways to deal with that and I tried a few and they seemed to work okay most of the time but they're really just not worth the trouble.

On both devices when I'm picking a font size I never really find exactly what I want. This can be irritating when I'm picking the font size. I've learned, however, that whichever size I pick seems fine when I'm reading. It's only when picking font sizes that it bothers me.

With the Kobo, you can patch the firmware and change the default font sizes and put in the exact font sizes you want. That would solve your font size problem.

Of course, you can do this on the PW 3 and Voyage, as well.

The PW is now under $100 so hopefully the new KV2 will be announced soon.

I think it only works for azw3 or something now. Ie does not work for all formats.

Used to be able to sideload font on kindle, too, but daddy took the T bird away.

In effect that's true with the Kindles as well. I tried that FONT_STEP thing to change the font sizes and I adjusted it and got it exactly where I wanted it on my Voyage. I left it like it was on my Paperwhite and I still found when reading I didn't much care. When I was picking the font sizes I did like the new sizes a lot better.

Anyway I later did a full reset of my Voyage (I do that every few months on most of my devices) and I didn't bother to redo that FONT_STEP thing.

I think it's what I find while reading that really matters and when I'm reading I'm in the world of the book and font sizes simply don't exist. I read paperback books most of my life. I'm just about to turn 75 and I've been reading since I was 4 and I've read a lot of paperbacks. I'm not sure what fonts any of them had or what sizes. Maybe they were all the same. Probably not. It really never mattered to me.

I've experimented with other facets of this since I began reading on modern ereaders. I've tried reading with and without right justification, with wider and narrower margins, with different line spacings, with different fonts, etc. With only a very few exceptions while I'm reading these things simply don't matter to me. When I'm comparing the way they look they matter a lot but that's not very important. It's when I'm reading that it matters.

I think this is similar to the arguments I use to have with audiophiles. I've always been a music lover and I have a pretty good ear. I can be perfectly happy listening to music on a decent mono speaker. I can sure tell the difference when I listen on a fine set of speakers. The difference is huge, but with few exceptions, it doesn't matter to my enjoyment of the music. It matters a lot when comparing but I get just as lost in the music either way and love it just as much.

Audiophiles don't get that. I don't get audiophiles.

JSWolf doesn't get that. I don't get JSWolf.

But Wolf, I'm glad you're here. I do learn a lot from you.
