This is great news.
Perhaps I will finally install it in a virtual machine on this notebook. It came with Windows 8, but after a two week struggle with new UI I have upgraded it to Mint Linux.
Looks like I will finally be able to make use of the Windows license I have been forced to pay for.

At the moment it is only in the "Insider" version of Windows 10.

Classic menu runs fine for me.
And I shrunk the native Win10 menu to the absolute minimum:no room for tiles or ads.

This is easily turned off by an option in the start settings page.

Thank you.
I wonder if it was an intentional clcikbait by Slashdot editors.
I am re-reading long-winded Slashdot discussion and it looks like this *is* an option. Off by default for some "insirders" and On for others.
We shall see the fallout ;-)

Maybe this?

As part of our effort to bring Windows 10 to existing genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers, the Windows 10 upgrade may appear as an optional update in the Windows Update (WU) control panel. This is an intuitive and trusted place people go to find Recommended and Optional updates to Windows. In the recent Windows update, this option was checked as default; this was a mistake and we are removing the check.
Windows 10 upgrade installing automatically on some Windows 7, 8 systems

I accidentally got around this issue, both at home and at work...

At home, since I never use IE and really, really can't stand it, I always remove IE from the Windows Features box (I run Win7). Well, Windows 10 won't install unless you have a fully up-to-date IE11 installation. It actually made for a couple headaches when I actually WANTED to upgrade one of my PCs to Win10, but my main gaming rig is staying at Win7 due to some compatibility issues other users have complained about with Win10.

At work, we have to use an older version of IE for our customers (who are, technologically speaking, in the Dark Ages or thereabouts), so the same thing happens. None of us are bothered by Win10 upgrade requests!
Apparently this even prevented Windows from trying to get you to install Windows 10!

Since some people have said they want to prevent the update...
Easy solution since Internet Explorer is an abomination which you are well rid of...

My Win7 desktop has recently suffered updates which blew up my display settings. It will no longer detect my second monitor (HDMI) and reset my screen resolution to what it thought was "optimal", not taking into account my ancient eyeballs.

The first time it happened rolling back updates fixed it. This time I was able to reset the resolution, but haven't been able to get the second monitor working in spite of rolling back the drivers.

So my cynicism kicked in and caused me to wonder if it was intentional on M$'s part to "encourage" me to upgrade.

"My Win7 desktop has recently suffered updates which blew up my display settings. "

Yes, I just updated my Win7 and now the macs in the household either can't keep connected or connect at all. Arg!

I hate, hate, hate anything that looks like or feels like Windows 8. Honestly thinking of dumping my windows machine and going Mac with a network hard drive box. If I didn't have a $3000 scanner that only works on PC, I would have done it years ago. My husband's 27" imac is soooooo nice!

Windows 10. I don't know. Even if it is free I just don't think I want to go there, ever.

My experience with Win 10 is (an others say the same) is excellent. It handles the network and connecting with my other machines much better than win7 did. I skipped win8 from the beginning, it just had too many issues.

Yes, mine too with a couple of exceptions. As discussed before, it's not Win10 that was hexing my WiFi but rather HyperV, once I disabled that the WiFi was fine.

The other issue, and I may never forgive M$, is they dropped SOLITAIRE!!! (actually they did it in Win8)

That was the whole reason I was keeping Win7 on my desktop.
