I have no problem with them creating a LotR feel to the movies. I like those, so more of it is a good thing.

If LoTR had a post-apocalyptic setting, then I'd agree that Shannara TV series was "targeting" LoTR fans. But since video clips and interviews clearly show that the "future-OUR-Earth-post-apoc-slant" is being emphasized even more in the show than it was in the books, I think it's safe to say that LoTR fans are not the only target audience. In fact, I rather suspect that some LoTR fans may actually be a bit turned off by the futuristic, scifi-ish slant the show is going to exhibit.

D'ya 'spose Aragorn would be caught dead in that skullcap hat and hoodie?

There's even been rumors of guns for heaven's sake!

I myself welcome the deviation from the books in that regard. It will make it more difficult for the "it's just a LoTR ripoff" purists/critics to sabotage the show before it's given a chance.

They can say it all they want about the book (the first Shannara book anyway), but the show ain't the books.

Assuming that the girl at 1.17 is Amberle, she looks quite some years older and much more confident than she's described in the book.

The cast also mentions Commander Tilton and Catania as characters. I don't remember them.

John Rhys-Davies... from a 16/17-th century ship pilot (in Shogun, 1980) to a Dwarf (2001) to King of the Elves (2015). That's quite the career

Yeah, must confess. Never viewed the Shannara series as "sci-fi" nor really post-apocalyptic sci-fi, even though it obviously was, certainly in...I forget which now, the one with the giant critter and the ancient city.

Must also confess, the whole hoodie thing just turned me right the hell off. Of course, I'm 99.99% sure that MTV isn't targeting this at my demographic. {sigh}.

That's probably the age demographic more than anything, right?

I suspect I'm not in their demographic either in that regard. I just don't care much about age appropriateness (with regard to what I want to watch).

These books were such a huge part of my teenage/young adult years that there's no way I'm not going to give it a shot.

The advantage I have going in, is that I don't really NEED the show to be anything: good/bad; canon/completely off the rez; LoTR/Not LoTR--if I like it, I like it. And if I don't... oh well. No harm, no foul.

I do think they're very smart to hedge their bets on the High Fantasy vs Post-apoc SF front, though. Should garner them a decent mix of fans of both--depending on how they ultimately play it.

Yes, you're probably right, but I admit, codger that I am, the modern spin on it, mixed with dwarves, (or dwarfs, depending on who you're reading), elves, magical hero's quest, magical items, shadowen, etc. is sorta off-putting to my OCD brains. But who knows? I may love it. I'll definitely try it; I'm not yet so set in my ways that I won't even do THAT.

Second, I just hope Eretria is not as much a know-it-all B#$%tch as she was in the book. If there was one character in the Shannara series I'd like to backhand in the face, it would be her.
Third, whatever they do, I hope they keep the ending as it is in the book. That ending is what makes Elfstones memorable, at least for me.

The first season, at least, is based on Elfstones.
